Cloth Diapering

Cd laundry question

I received my GMD prefolds along with their 10 page information sheet.  Becuase I'm anal retentive, I read the whole thing.  I'm using RnG detergent from the get go, but it mentions that using other detergents (like for my own clothing) defeats the purpose.  It also talks about using a disinfectant because the clean-rinsing detergents aren't enough to actually clean the diaper (she suggests a few drops of bleach or borax).  She says it increases the chance of rashes without such an agent.

Do you all use one detergent exclusively for all your laundry?  (It sounds kind of expensive).  Do you also use a disinfectant?

thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Re: Cd laundry question

  • I use a different detergent for my clothes and have all along; have not had issues because of it.  I would not use bleach regularly especially if you have anything with PUL in the wash, save it for when you need it.
  • We use allens for cd laundry. We use purex free and clear for ours. We haven't had any problems, but I know a lot of people use purex free and clear for their CDs too

  • I use RnG for CDs, and 7th Generation for the rest of our laundry. I've never had a problem.

I have never used a disinfectant, bleach, or borax.

  • I do use one detergent for all laundry - Arm and Hammer for Sensitive Skin.  It's a pretty cheap detergent, and worked fine for CDs until we moved somewhere with hard water.  I'm currently experimenting with baking soda and vinegar, but may end up switching my CD laundry to RnG soon.  We don't use a disinfectant.
