1st Trimester

is it safe to lose weight?

I still need to lose 30# to be back to my pre-pregnancy weight from DD. I started working out a month ago and I want to be healthy for this baby, and I think I need to lose weight in order to do that. I'll ask my Dr on Friday but I want to know what you all have heard.

Re: is it safe to lose weight?

  • I actually just saw my nutritionist today and she told me it isn't healthy to lose weight during pregnancy. Your baby is growing and you should at least gain the weight of the baby, placenta, and amniotic fluid. Of course everyone might be different but you should definitely consult your doctor about it.

  • Definately ask your doctor.  Unfortunately from everything that I've read, it's not safe to lose weight while your pregnant.  The books even said that no matter how much you gained in the first trimeseter, you still need to go on to gain within the suggested range for both the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
  • I've heard/read conflicting information on this.

I know a few women (college roommate, sister in law, cousin) who lost weight during their first trimesters, due to loss of appetite/nausea. All three of them told me that their doctors said it was ok (and relatively common) for women to lose weight in the first trimester, due to nausea.

I've also read that it is ok for women who are very overweight to lose weight during the first trimester, because they have enough extra weight that they can "afford" to lose some during pregnancy.

But, I've also read in multiple books and on various websites that it is not a good idea to lose weight while pregnant, whatsoever.

I would definitely speak with your OB about it. Good luck!

  • I am overweight and my Doctor doesn't want me gaining more than 15 pounds but definitely doesn't want me losing any either. I lost 7 pounds over the weekend because I was so sick. They weren't too happy about it. I think as long as you continue doing the exercise you were doing prior to getting pregnant, and eat right. Your body will be healthy for when the baby is born.
  • Losing weight is a no-no, especially if you're doing it intentionally by restricting calorie intake. If you are overweight they do suggest that you only gain baby. Lots of women do lose weight in their first trimester due to sickness- I'm down 5 and asked the dr about it. She said that what my body does is out of my hands but so long as I'm not intending to lose weight and fighting my body's needs then it's ok.

I would say maintaining a healthy calorie intake and continuing a moderate workout regime is ok (if you JUST started working out hard you're probably going to want to dial it back as it's still not something your body is used to). If you are eating right throughout your pregnancy then the weight you're gaining will fall of easier than the pounds packed on by inactivity and McDonalds runs.

I would take to your dr about it, but I'm certain that they aren't going to give you the ok to diet while you're pregnant.

  • The ban on losing weight during pregnancy only applies to intentional weight loss by calorie restriction and intense exercise.

It's completely okay to lose weight during your first trimester, a lot of women do because of nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. For me, I was so sleepy that I usually either slept through breakfast or laid down for a nap at 4 and didn't wake up until the next morning, missing dinner. Because I was only eating 2 meals each day, I lost 6 pounds. My doctor was entirely unconcerned.

In your situation it's perfectly ok to continue your exercise regimine (as long as your doctor says it's ok and it's nothing too strenuous) and continue eating healthily. You don't need to up calorie intake until your second trimester, at which point you should begin consuming an extra 200-300 calories per day.

  • I would definetely suggest you check with your doctor.  In the meantime, I would suggest you just eat healthy and focus on your baby.  Worry about the weight loss after the baby, no need to stress yourself out now.

I would consult your doctor,  of course, but this was the impression I was under.  I would think that any weight loss as a result of healthy eating and exercise wouldn't be frowned upon, as long as it was to become healthier, not as a result of dieting to shed weight.

On a personal note, I've lost 17 lbs (with a starting weight of 124 lbs) since 5w as a result of "morning sickness"  and not one of the three doctors were concerned about my weight loss as an individual symptom.

  • Talk to your doctor!

I would keep up with light exercise and eating healthy.

  • Like everyone else suggests, talk to your doctor.  From everything I have read, losing weight in most cases is NOT ok.  BUT, concentrate on eating healthy, well balanced meals.  My doctor advised me it is OK to do any excercise I was doing pre-pregnancy, but if it became difficult or painful to stop.  Also, increase your water intake to make sure you are staying hydrated.
