Pregnant after 35

sorry if this gets asked too often but...

Doed being pg after 35 automatically makes one "high risk"? Meaning, will 8 have to be seen on a regular basis by a perinatologist in addition to my regular OB? Thanks in advance. :)

  • No, being 35 doesn't make you high risk, just higher risk.  However, most insurance companies will cover extra testing like an NT Scan once you hit 35.  My first successful pregnancy (I was 38) and not considered high risk until I hit 32 weeks, but only because I developed some complications including internal bleeding and pre-e.  I'm now 40 and pregnant again and considered high risk - not because of my age, but due to Asherman's Syndrome.  However, I am still seeing my regular OB with extra visits for high level ultrasounds.

Thanks so much for your reply. Best of luck with everything!

  • No, I am 36 and just saw my OB for the first time this week.  He is treating everything like my first pregnancy (pre-35)...except he mentioned amino if I wanted it after my NT scan.  I, too, thought it was going to be this big deal that I am now "high risk" b/c of my age, but it's really not all that.  Let's pray that there will be not complications and continue to be normal/low risk!  :)

     Good luck!!

  • I am 40 and have only been seen by my regular OB so far (I did do CVS test at 11 weeks though.)

  • That was also one of the first questions I had.  My OB told me that my age was not a factor in being high risk, just my other issues.

  • no - I am almost 40 with #2, and other than morning sickness had no other issues

I think now a lot of OBs are doing genetic testing on all age mothers, not just over 35. Theory being that since younger mothers have more babies in general, there are more risk of genetic issues.
