GMD prefolds sizes

So I am 40 weeks, 1 day... I have wanted to wait and see how big my baby is before I order my GMD prefolds, but am getting antsy! And you never know how fast the will grow.  I have heard some people use newborns for a few months, some only for a few weeks, some skipping orange or yellow all together, and a million other things.

Please tell me about sizing, how long your LO was in each size and how any other tips!!

My current shopping cart has 20 orange edge, plus 4 orange workhorse (fitted diapers). Then 24 yellow edge, plus 6 yellow workhorse fitted diapers. And a few reds so I can tr them when the time comes.

Of course I am also ordering covers and accessories, but I keep going back and forth on the actual diapers and how much in each size.

**I do plan on using up some of my sposies at first, which is why I don't have a ton of newborn.

Re: GMD prefolds sizes

  • The great thing about prefolds is that you can fold them to fit even if they aren't the perfect size.  I would caution against ordering red edge at this point as you won't need those for months and months and you may have decided at that point that prefolds are not your favorite (which is what happened to us with our wiggle worm!).  DS was 8 lb 11 oz at birth and the yellow edge really didn't fit him well until he was a couple of months old; we didn't buy any orange edge though, did KL0s instead.  Depending on how many sposies you have, you may want to skip the orange edge as you can just fold the yellow edge down a bit.

  • LO is 8wks old and I packed up the orange-edged prefolds today to break out the yellow-edged ones. She was about 5 lbs at birth and they fit her fine.
(They looked huge at the time but now I'm used to the fluffy butt!) She's now about 9.5lbs.  We *could* make it fit, but I feel like they're just not wide enough to snappi well. Also, we could still use them trifolded in covers if need be.

  • I had an 8lb, 5oz newborn and he was in orange-edge for 6 weeks.
  • I have a skinny mini now. He was 7lb 14oz at birth and wore the orange edge newborns for 2-3 weeks. We went with periwinkle edge newborns, which they don't make anymore, but these are my favorite size. He wore those much longer than the orange newborns. Around 3-4 months we moved up to the yellows and he can still wear them today at 18 months (he is only in 15% for weight, though...so most 18m olds probably can't still wear yellows).

ETA: Honestly, since you are going to use up some sposies AND you're overdue, I'd skip the orange ones altogether. I only have 11 orange edges and I almost feel like I won't need them anyway because I have the periwinkle edge ones that are only slightly bigger. Many people skip the orange and start with yellows. Have you had any growth scans? Do you have any weight estimates from recent ultrasounds? If you have a lot of sposies to use, maybe cut your orange order down to a dozen or skip them completely.

  • I have only used orange and yellow edge because we switched to pockets when DD started solids.  The orange fit newborns very well, but the yellows are fine, too - you just need to fold them down.  I have 12 orange and 18 yellow edge, so I have to use both on a newborn.  If you want to save some money, you can totally get away with just using yellow edge.  We switched to pockets full-time when DD was about 5.5 months and 13-14 lbs, and she still had room to grow in the yellow-edge (she was a skinny one, though).

  • Thanks for everyone's feedback :)

Its nice to hear diff. experiences!

Of course, as my previous research had shown... it all depends on the baby's size. luckily prefolds aren't a huge investment so I'll probably just get enough orange edge for part-time use, and stock up on yellows.

At my last u/s (34 weeks) they had said LO was right on track. Then at my next doctor appt. she said "well they said she was small but I don't think she is too small" and when I asked if everything seemed okay size-wise, she said yes. So she *may* be a little on the small side but probably average. And since I am overdue, I'm sure she will be a decent sized baby. I will probably take your advice and cut back on orange. Thanks!!
