Cloth Diapering

EBF - dirty diaper wash/ routine question...

I know that I have read this a million places... but can somebody help me out?

I got into an argument about cloth diapers last night, and basically got a lecture about how you have to rinse them before washing (the vinegar soak was also mentioned...) now I know that once they start eating solids you do have to (and would want to) rinse off the poo, but until then an ebf baby's CDs can just be tossed into the rinse cold/ hot wash/ rinse cycle like anything else? Am I wrong?

Anyway... she said she wouldn't feel comfortable and why wouldn't I rinse anyway (um... more work? For no reason...). I know there is reasoning behind it, but not finding anything this morning.

TIA

(edited... poo, not pooh...haha too much nursery shopping)

Re: EBF - dirty diaper wash/ routine question...

  • So long as they're EBF, you don't need to rinse first. My usual wash routine is rinse/drain/spin, hot wash, rinse, rinse. I've been known to just do a soak first to add some more weight too, though.

My DH was grossed out about washing dirty diapers in the washer at first. Then I pointed out to him that we did wash underwear in the washer, and it's not precisely clean either.... and that EBF is water soluble. We'll be using liners once she's on solids.

  • Even if you were to FF, you wouldn't have to swish the diapers before tossing them in the wash. Your friend is high.

She may not feel comfortable, but 1) babies pee, poo, and throw up on other clothes, so what't eh difference really? and 2) your poo is going into the sewer just like baby poo from the washer.

  • Thanks! I did throw back the argument that the clothes would/ could be dirty too... I think her issue was that it was "gross" in the washer (I think she also used the word unsanitary)... really I would think that you expect the washer to clean stuff and not leave residue and so on behind, so I am not sure where the issue comes from...

"Water soluble" may be the key there...

It is so funny, because just after her DH starts talking about how they made all their own baby food and so on... so I shouldn't have to fight with her about my "crazy" plans...

I was very proud of myself... since I stayed calm (kept the pg hormones under control) and explained that i had done a lot of research and that if you looked at any of the CD brand websites they explain the process and it is this.

  • I love this thread for debunking the "unsanitary" aspect: https://tinyurl.com/2fthp2k

But yeah... when DD was an infant (in disposables full-time), she had blow-outs just about daily. And I threw the poopy clothes in the wash and never thought twice about it.

I've never rinsed one of DS's diapers, and we've had no issues. He's even eating some solids now, and I figure as long as his poop stays runny, I'm not going to worry about rinsing it!

Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)

  • Shes high.  I just tossed the EBF poo in the wash, never rinsed.  Hell I would clean her off, never manage to not get poo on the changing pad, so I would toss diaper, changing pad and all in to the wash.  Now that shes on solids I rinse because its no longer runny.
