Side Sleeping = Hip Pain

So I'm trying to sleep on my side since 15/16 weeks is when they say you should start.  I'm usually a side sleeper so I figured this wouldn't be an issue.  But I am always waking up on my back!

My hips hurt when I'm on my side so I think I roll over to my back to ease the pressure.  We have a double pillow top mattress with a down mattress topper - it's like sleeping on the cloud.  But even all that extra padding isn't helping.

Any ideas?

Re: Side Sleeping = Hip Pain

  • I posted about my love for the Boppy body pillow last night and would highly recommend it.  I was having problems sleeping on my side because of shoulder pain etc. and now I have slept well 3 nights in a row.  Other people in my post had suggestions of other types of body pillows too if you want to take a look.

  • I started using a body pillow alredy and its helped, i'm normally a stomach sleeper, and its been difficult already, and trying to get into the habit of sleeping on my side.  Its been hurting my shoulder though...

I would suggest a body pillow to start with.

  • I am having the same issue.  I purchased the Snoogle body pillow, and it is not helping.  I have a sore shoulder, sore hips, and a sore neck.  I went back to my normal pillow between the knees last night, and my husband used my Snoogle.

  • I have the snoogle, too, and do experience back pain when I sleep on my left side.  I'm fine on the right side but the left kills me.  For me, I feel like it may be due in part by the fact that I'm basically in the same position all night.

  • I used to be a side sleeper, and never had a problem, but lately it just hasn't been comfortable for me. I find sometimes I lean forward a little bit and then just that little bit of pressure on my belly makes me uncomfortable, even though I can still lie on my stomach and feel fine. It's weird.

I'm thinking of trying some sort of body pillow instead of a regular one so I can get a better sleep.

  • I used to be a side sleeper too, but for some reason I can't seem to get comfortable....so I find myself on my back alot too! I did try a body pillow the other day, and i woke up with a sore back....so I haven't used it since then. Maybe once we get bigger the body pillows will feel more comfortable?

  • I have started noticing hip pain the last few nights.  My hip and butt muscles get so cramped that it wakes me up and I can't get back to sleep.  I wish I knew a great way to get rid of it.  My SO didn't like my idea of him waking up and giving me massages to make it better. Wink

  • it may sound silly, but I switched from one pillow to two and now I'm much more comfortable.  My head is more in line with my spine and my shoulder hurts less.

  • Are your hips achy or is it like a pressure point on the one hip you're sleeping on (does that make any sense?). If my hips are achy I sleep with a pillow bw my legs, but I also am finding it uncomfortable pressure on the hip I'm sleeping on...as if my bed is rock hard, but I too have a pillow top. I don't have any solutions for that.
