I have no alternatives, but funny story courtesy of my friend Milli (Mildred):
She was named after her grandmother and was born in 1970. Most people if not all, think of Mildred as an old lady name. I forget what we were talking about. And she told me that when she was born, the nurses had asked her Mom what the baby's name was. Milli's mother replied "Mildred (named after her grandmother)". The nurse looked horrified and said "Oh you can't do that to that poor baby!".
I'll admit before I met my friend the only Milli's I had heard of were old ladies (but they were once babies too).
Or how about Millicent for an alternative?

Are you wanting an alternative NN to Milly, or an alternative name entirely to Mildred?
If you hate the name, don't use it. Or use it as a MN. Or use one of their MN's.
I don't know how you feel about "old lady chic" names, but Francis Christine is adorable IMO, and it honors them both without having to use Mildred at all!
My personal favorite would be Matilda - they both share the MILDE root which means strength, and the letters they have in common are MILD, so you could say that Matilda is a MILD form of Mildred.
Thanks for all of the good suggestions. I like Mila...will have to add that to the list. Francis Christine I think would be a hard sell with my husband - using both names for MY family, lol. Hmm. It'll probably be boy #3 anyway and then this whole discussion is pointless.
My grandmother's name was Mildred too. It is one of the reasons that I'm considering Amelia. They have the same nn (Millie) and that actually was my Grandma's nn throughout life. If we have a girl, and name her Amelia, then Millie would be the nn.

Re: Alternatives to Mildred besides Milly?
Their middle names are much nicer
The only Mildred I know goes by Candy, so I'm guessing she doesn't like her name much either.
Amelia kinda sounds similar. But I think if you take it that far, you lose the meaning.
Can Mildred be the middle name?

Mildred goes by Dre? Drea?
Matilda, Millicent, anything that means "gentle strength?"
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this name...it's like Mildew and Dread. If you're giving her name, Mildred, but need a nick name, I think Red would be okay.
