Post partum doula?

Has anyone used one...or understand what value they may offer?  A friend of mine said she is going to have one and now I am curious to see if it is worth it?

    We're thinking about hriing a doula for the birth and post partum. I know I will KILL my mother and MIL....

    I wasn't thinking about a doula but was thinking about a baby nurse (I could be dreaming though $$ wise). My mom has passed away and my MIL lives overseas so I really don't have someone to help me. My sister and aunt are useless. I think that if you feel you're going to need extra help after the birth then it's worth talking to someone about it.

    im thinking about getting some kind of help, my mom cant come and i have no MIL. all our close friends live in other states or other countries. what different kinds of help are available?

    Great...I'm glad to know I'm not the only one....I just think with no family around to help...we will need some help at first :)
