caesar salad?

i thought i was in the clear when i saw that anchovies were low in mercury, but because i'm too thorough, i still looked up caesar dressing and saw a bunch of links about needing to avoid it because the dressing has raw eggs. is this true? i was JUST about to send my husband out to get me a chicken caesar salad for lunch.... do they really have raw eggs in them?

  • The raw eggs are only if you are at a super fancy restaurant that makes the dressing right in front of you and/or by hand in the kitchen. Your run of the mill restaurants and home bottles do not have raw egg in them.
  • The old recipe used to call for raw eggs, but (as far as I know), any restaurant or place selling Ceasar Salad in the US is required to at least poach the eggs now. You cannot even order eggs sunny-side-up anywhere (or they are not supposed to serve it that way), as the FDA ruled that eggs may contain Salmonella and cannot be served raw. The only way to know for sure is to call the place you are sending DH to get your lunch. I'll bet you they'll say they don't use raw eggs.

  • thanks ladies.... i plan on calling and asking but i am expecting a not-fully informed answer (i'm probably way too cynical!), so i wanted a little bit of reassurance first. the internet can be great with info, but also really overwhelming!

  • Eh, to each their own.

I licked the spoon/bowl after I made brownies yesterday, which consisted of mix, oil, water, and 2 eggs, it was SO yummy too!

They will definitely know if they use raw egg or not - and ask for the manager.

And, now, thanks to The Bump, I want Caesar Salad and fondue today. :)

My sentiment exactly - caesar salad with blue cheese beer fondue.

  • I went to a local italian place (not fancy) and inquired about their ceaser salad, and it did infact have raw eggs, so dont assume that only fancy places have it.....make sure to ask!
