Hello,
I just found out on Monday that I am pregnant with our first child...I am so excited. I am 30 years old (turning 31 in October) and have our first appointment on Monday the 13th.
I have been taking a multi-vitamin, calcuim (lactose intolerate so don't drink much milk) and extra folic acid. The question I have it how big are the prenatal vitamins? The biggest pill I can take is like a tylonal or advil otherwise I choke on them. Is there anything out there that I can take? Any advise would be wonderful!!
Re: Hello...question on prenatal vitamins
They are not big at all, about the same size as your calcium pill or One a Day (i take calcium pills too)
The big pill is the fish oil that I have to take. It's kinda huge.
they're horse pills, but you could break them up and add them to a smoothie or something. You could also take a few individual suppliments, very importantly Iron. The Dr Sears pregnancy book says: 800mg of calcium, .4mg of folic acid and 40mg of iron.
Alternately you could ask a compounding pharmacy if they can make you a vitamin powder, or get smaller pills that you take 3x daily instead of just once.
In my last pregnancy the vitamins made me sicker because the iron in them can be hard on the stomach. At my midwife's suggestion I took folic acid, and calcium and made sure I ate a lot of iron rich foods.
My OB gave me some samples of prescription prenatals, and they were HUGE!
Target has a gummy prenatal, which is what I take. I'm not big on swallowing pills to begin with, but ever since I've gotten pg, my gag reflex is out of control, which has made swallowing pills almost impossible! The gummy prenatals are perfect for me.
The CVS brand is just like an regular tylenol (not gel-cap). I take that and an expecta lipil DHA which is like an advil liqui-gel capsule.
I'm the same way, can't take any big stuff so this is the best solution I can find (approved by doc).
I also find that if I take any pill with a carbonated drink, it makes it go down smoother.
This!
I take the Target brand and I don't think they are big, the Allegra-D I took before my BFP was larger.
Maybe you should look for the prenatal gummie vitamins, that way you wouldn't have to swallow any pills.
At this point, I can't even keep the gummies down - I'm just taking all my FA suppliments to deal with the MTHFR and that's all I can handle.
My doc said "whatever" and that it's more important just not to get sick.
So, if these gummies are working for you, maybe add a DHA suppliment and it should be fine.
Thanks all for the advice...I might try the gummy prenatal vitamins if I can find them...I take a lot of things that are gummy...My calcium is a gummy, my vitamins are gummy so if I can take those I will do that...if I have to change when I see the doctor on Monday I will but I want to be taking the right stuff...
Thanks all!
