Baby drinking out of a sippy cup while lying down...is this normal?

My SIL just sent me a picture of her 6 month old son drinking out of a sippy cup....he's lying down flat on his back while drinking out of the sippy cup.  This seems odd to me...like it's some kind of choking hazard for the water to go down the wrong pipe or something.  Am I being an uneducated/overprotective first time mom with my feeling here?  Just curious because I don't even drink anything while lying flat on my back...I at least lift my head up if I'm lying down.

  • I don't know the answer, but don't babies drink bottles while lying down quite a bit?

  • Yeah but when you feed a baby their head is lifted - his was not...idk I just thought it was weird.

  • Having a child lay flat on their back while drinking increases their chances of having more ear infections. A child should be elevated while drinking.

  • Its pretty normal. My daughter was too lazy to tilt her sippy cup backwards to get her milk, so if she was laying down it would work just fine. She never choked or anything.

I agree.  Especially at 6 mo.   Kids are just really getting the hang of holding their bottles/cups by then.  It helps if they are laying down.  And my kids would lay themselves flat.  Slide down off of a pillow, just to drink or play.  They didn't like being propped.  I'd say it's ok.

  • I think it's fine. Ideally, they would be propped on something, but by 6 months you don't always get to decide what position they lay in to drink their bottle or sippy.

Yep this.  Also keep in mind that with sippy cups you actually have to suck on them for anything to come out and even at that its small amounts at a time so its not liek they are getting a ton of water coming at them.

  • Did you guys happen to watch last weeks episode of Flipping Out?  This totally reminded me of it when Jett was feeding his son flat on his back with a bottle and Zoila said no it's bad for his ears....
