Preemies

so confused - I hate RSV

I effing hate RSV.  RSV is approaching and I'm turning into this nervous wreck.  Last year we took the safe route - total lockdown.

I do not know what to do this year. I'm afraid if I make one dumb decision, he's going to wind up so sick.

We can't handle total lockdown - it has to be something in between - but even now, we're being pretty careful, and he's almost been sick constantly since we lifted lockdown (4 colds, a 3 month sinus infection.)

Most people I've asked (people who are educated in that area - pedis, nurses, etc.) have suggestion I be fairly careful and I should take it fairly seriously still.  But we are being careful now and he's sick so much.  But then his pedi didn't seemed concerned.  I emailed his NICU follow-up Neonatologist to see what he suggestions.

Moms of older preemies, what are you doing this year?

Re: so confused - I hate RSV

  • We stayed in total lockdown the first year.  After that we were just very careful where we went/who we were around.  We would go to parks and playgrounds outside (it doesn't get very cold here), but we did not go to indoor play areas like malls or restaurants.  He only played with the kids in our playgroup because I knew that I could trust those moms to tell me if their kids were/had been sick.  This year he is in preschool and I am super nervous, but I know that I have to let him out of the bubble sometime.

  •  When we went in for a check-up our Dr. said it really won't hurt the girls to bad if they get it since they are old enough to fight off. I know when they were in NICU last year they gave them the shot. I don't know if they will give it to older kids something you could ask about.

  • We were in semi-lockdown the twins first year and did get their synagis shots.  Their sesond year we weren't.  I was working and they wer ein daycare.  Jonathan had bronchitis and several stomach bugs, colds and ear infections and ended up with tubes.  Matthew had bronchitis and pneumonia, roseolla, stomach bugs, colds, ear infections tubes.  If I could have a do over I would be not in total lockdown but would be more cautious then we were.

Christopher was more in a lockdown his first year since the insurance wouldn't do the synagis shots.  We did the same the second year.  He did better.

  • Brandon's first year he was in lockdown. He came home from the NICU at the end of September and RSV season started October 1st. The second year he was at a babysitter with a few other kids. He did qualify for the RSV shots the second season. He was sick several times and wound up on a nebulizer but didn't get RSV. Mostly ear infections and wound up getting tubes in March. We avoided crowded places like the mall but went out to dinner, got together with friends for playdates, and went to some other places. This year we will be going out and he won't be on lockdown. We will still use precautions but he is a very outgoing child and would go crazy if I kept him in.

  • We did total lockdown last year because he came home from the NICU in October.  Unfortunately, that's not possible this year and he's going to be in daycare.  He started daycare in April and has had many colds since then, so I am just bracing for RSV season and hoping it isn't too bad.  He did get RSV last year, but it was in January when he was on the shots, so it was basically just a bad cold, thanks to the synagis.
  • Our first year DS was on semi-lockdown, with Synagis, but he was in Daycare so we tried our best other than that. Thankfully we only had one really bad cold and one long ear infection from like Nov-May. (seriously)

This year his pedi says he wouldn't qualify for Synagis, so we will probably just do daycare and family, but no stores/outings.
