I haven't read the birth stories board, but I have read plenty of birth stories and they don't terrify me. I find it informative and empowering. Avoid the bad stories...ppl always want to talk about those. There are plenty of good stories (as good as you can get, I guess, with a watermelon coming out of your vag). The more you know about what is going to happen with your body in labour, the less freaked out you will become in the moment.

I think I am the only person I know (IRL) who is actually ridiculously excited about the labor process. I didn't have the best birth experience last time (it's in my blog if you want to read) but I am so stinkin' excited to give birth this time.
I think it's great that you are trying to educate yourself and I don't think you should limit yourself to only the good birth stories otherwise you might set yourself up for disappointment. Labor can be a biitch (like I said, mine wasn't roses) but it is amazing.
And now I realize that I sound crazy :P

True. You want to be prepared for and open to things not going according to plan. And yes, it will hurt, you may tear, it may be long and arduous. I guess what I mean is don't get yourself psyched out by the stories with the absolute worst outcome.
Becca, I'm totally excited to labour and give birth too.

You're not alone Becca! I'm also super excited for this one! I feel like I'm training for something big, like a marathon, and when it's all over I'll be so proud to be able to say "I did it!". Mind you, I'm planning on going natural with this one (with my first, it was the whole being out of control thing that terrified me, and thus makes it hurt more), but I'm not scared, I'm totally pumped!

Hehehe... during my vacation week -which i spent at home - i watched "a baby story" and "bringing home baby" on tv, and just freaked myself out. All the screaming moms giving natural births and the emergency c-sections, etc scared me. Plus then there's bringing home the baby and all it does is scream all day and night. *sigh* i freaked out my non pregnant freinds too by describing each episode to them. Fortunately for my sanity (and my fiancee's) i have stopped watching them. Although, i read Belly Laughs by Jenny Mccarthy last week and now i am obsessed with pooping on the delivery table.
It's okay! I'm thinking about it too and I'm planning on a natural L&D. My doula recommended the book "birthing from within" and reading the first part has made me feel really good about it. There's lots of 'empowerment' type stuff in the book and it helps you feel like L&D is something you can do.

Actually I am too! Giving birth to DS was absolutely the best experience in my life. I was induced w/ cervadil at exactly 40 weeks (high BP), epidural made me feel no pain/pressure, pushed 20 minutes (9.8 lbs) and recovery was super easy! I just pray this one goes the exact same way!
