Winter coat?

What are you ladies doing for a winter coat? I hate to buy something that is maternity- coats are expensive enough without being restricted to one season of wearing it- but we are all going to be big as houses during the coldest part of the year.

I'm thinking of buying something up a few sizes from my size now, where it won't look too huge later on but will give me room for baby.

If anyone finds cute coats that would work, you should come share a linky with the board :)

Re: Winter coat?

  • I'm lucky in that I used to be a size 24 and now am a size 10- so I have several sizes of clothes (including coats) that I will have to choose from.  I didn't get rid of them for that reason alone!

Maybe you could look at a thrift shop or garage sales (I know the season for garage sales is coming to a close... but a few more weekends might make it)

  • I was specifically told by a coworker who had a baby just this past march, do not BUY a coat!  Unless you live in arctic temps (we live in TN), you will be plenty warm in a sweater or pullover.  I have a coat that I figure I will wear and just not button.  For me, it'd just be to go from the house to the car to the office.  Not planning on spending a tremendous amount of time outside this winter.

  • I hadn't even thought about a coat.  I spend my days going in and out of houses.

Hmm..maybe I can hit up MIL or my mom?  They like to spoil me. But, probably by then, they'll be more excited to spoil the baby.

  • Unfortunately I live in arctic temps (Ontario, Canada)....so a winter coat will be bought! I was checking out maternity stores online, and then jackets aren't that much more expensive than regular ones. Perhaps I may look on local classifieds to see if anyone is selling one! If not....I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get one. Boo.

Me too!  Artic temps lol.... so true, and for me- I'm a hockey wife- so I spend a lot of time inside in an artic temp!  Hockey Arenas are still coat necessary, with a blanket, and 4 pairs of pants, and hot chocolate! lol

  • I bought one of the baby doll-style pea coats from Old Navy a couple of years ago, so that one will probably work for the coldest parts of winter. I also bought a maternity coat at a salvage store last winter just because I liked it, so that may come in handy! Other than those two, I'll probably just wear fleeces. I live in Alabama, so it doesn't get that cold here!

  • I had Lina in Dec.  I just wore one of Dh's coats, and am planning on doing the same thing again!

  • I have a long-ish pea coat that buttons up to my neck, so I'll just leave the bottom buttons unbuttoned. That will work for work where I will only walk from my office to my car, but I will probably need something for casual/sport. I live in Saskatchewan, so -30C will require it!

  • I live in MN, so yes I will be buying a coat.  I know there are 2nd hand maternity stores in my area, so I may look there.  I'll also look online or at Motherhood Maternity, Old Navy, etc.  Or, I will maybe wear some of my DH's coats (he's a bigger guy)!

  • With my fist (born in April) I was able to wear my regular coat throughout winter. It was a little snug, but no uncomfortable.

I would wait and not buy anything until you know you absolutely have to, what you have just might work.

  • My dh doesn't wear coast too often so I was thinking of stealing one of his.

  • I bought a winter coat with my first pregnancy.  I figured it was worth the expense since we planned on having 4 kids.  It has also been loaned out to lots of friends.

If you live in a cold place, I'd check consignment shops and ebay if you aren't willing to pay full price for a coat.

  • We have a store called Once Upon a Child, which is used baby/kid/maternity stuff at great prices and usually in great condition.  I have thought about buying one from there.  However with my son (I was due in May) I just wore my pre-pregnancy coat and left it unbottoned around the belly (so buttoned up top by my chest).  Honestly you get so HOT when you are in the latter part of the 2nd and all of the 3rd trimester that you probably won't feel the need to really bundle up too much.  With that said, I did pull the jacket closed (and it almost reached) so I wasn't running around without anything on and I did wear sweaters with a cami most days too.  So I already had a few layers on without a coat.

  • I bought a coat when I was pregnant with Ella and Luke. Thankfully! I know it will fit for sure because it fit with my twin belly.

i have a pea coat from old navy and a 3/4 length one from the gap. i was soooo tempted to buy another one from old navy the other day and my cousin was all "you can't button it up". so my solution to her was that i would just wear it and if there was extra space then i'd wear a scarf around my belly. i live in houston. it's never going to be THAT cold to where i would be endangering anything. and i still will need a coat next fall/winter when i'm not pregnant.

i'm avoiding buying brand new maternity things as much as possible. goodwill and thrift stores and ebay will do for me. cause that's where a lot of this is going after i get back in regular clothes.

  • I was just talking about this with my mom today! Old Navy has maternity pea coats for $40.
  • I wore my regular winter coat during my last pregnancy.  I was able to zip it up (barely) until the end.  I will probably do the same this time.

  • My last baby was due in March so I just did this once, I wore a regular coat . I was able to layer some sweatshirts/hoodies on just chilly days and I wore my pea coat on top on colder days, just couldn't button it but since there is an overlap I could easy wrap my belly for long enough to get where I was going. If you can find a good deal or live in really cold weather buy a maternity coat, otherwise its really not worth the trouble probably.
  • I live in Minnesota and was just about to ask the same question!  It gets -30F here on bad days, and it can get super windy as well, so I'm not super thrilled with the idea of just leaving the last few buttons unbuttoned.  My current winter coat is pretty form fitting, so I'm guessing it won't make it past November-ish.  I'm already feeling snug in one of my fall coats.  But at the same time I hate the idea of spending so much on a coat for just one year!  My current plan is just to stalk e-bay and second hand stores to see if anything turns up.  I had good luck doing that with maternity jeans.

Me three! I also take the bus home from work most days so I have no choice. I have to buy a coat. I have been checking out Motherhood online, and I think I'll check out old Navy, now that they ship to Canada.
