Babies: 9 - 12 Months

BF, lactose intolerance, milk allergy

I have EB for almost 11 mionths. for the past week LO has not been nursing well causing my milk supply to be super low (teething and a cold). He really is only interested in his morning feeding. Ok...with that said....

LO seems to have some type of reaction to milk...we have given him cheese and he is fine...it's when we give him yogurt and cottage cheese he seems to have a problem. He gets redish spots around his mouth. It doesnt last long but it does worry me....SO what kind of milk should I give him? SOY, RICE MILK? GOAT MILK? HELP!!! I don't want him to be on formula for a month....any suggestions?

  • All of my kids have had milk/soy allergies.  We used hemp milk until they outgrew it.  We bought ours at a health food store, but you can also order it online.  https://livingharvest.com/  It is expensive, but is loaded with good stuff.

  • Also, be sure to check with your pedi before switching.  Any type of milk alone may not be enough for your LO before one year.  Our pedi gave us the go ahead before one year, but please check with your pedi.

  • If your LO is only dairy allergic then your ped would probably recommend enriched soy milk.  DD is dairy/soy intolerant, and my ped wants DD to go on formula after a year (post bfing) because they feel other options do not have enough nutrition.  I would check with your ped.

  • S has a corn allergy which means that we cant suppliment with formula in any easy/affordable way.  I have recently returned to work out of the home 2 days a week and while I pump it is not enough.  I get about half of what S needs for the day.

Our pedi told us that since S is so close to 1 that we should try to mix the BM I do pump with goats milk. Nutritionally it is the closest to BM and often milk sensitivities are not as bad with goats milk.

I would of course talk to your pedi and maybe also a lactation consultant.  There may be a few reasons behind the milk sensitivity and goats milk may not help with all of them

Not sure if you are interested or not, but our youngest also has a corn allergy.  We use Baby's Only Organic Soy formula.  It uses rice syrup instead of corn syrup.  It is listed as a Toddler Formula, but is nutritionally equivalent to a baby formula (our ped gave us the go ahead on it).  It is $11.99 a can.

There is also a Parent's Choice milk based formula that does not use corn syrup that is slightly less expensive (our DD can not tolerate milk either so this one was out for us).

Just one other possible alternative for you if you're interested.
