How much sugar is too much when pg?

I have a serious sweet tooth and have to eat something sweet after lunch and dinner and usually also some candy or something in the afternoon. I know, it's bad, but I try to eat healthy otherwise. For instance I will have a salad for lunch but then eat a brownie or cookie or something after, then a couple of bite size candy bars in the afternoon then a healthy dinner like grilled fish and veggies but then have ice cream after. I also drink 1 soda a day like a root beer or ginger ale. Am I eating too much sugar for being pg?

  • I don't know the actual measurement or number for "too much" but that does sound like a bit too much sugar.  Your other meals sound great, though.  You could try swapping out that afternoon candy for a piece of fruit & peanut butter or something.  Also try to cut down to half a soda or you could do fruit juice + sparkling water instead of soda altogether.  That helped me kick my soda habit when I found out I was pg.  Eventually I reduced the fruit juice and increased the sparkling water.

I think I read that our bodies are more sensitive to sugar when we're pregnant so that's another reason to motivate you to reduce it a bit.

  • You're fine.  I think it's when the brownies and ice cream start replacing the meals that it becomes a problem.

  • I've been reading 'What to Eat When You are Pregnant'.  I'd suggest taking a look at it - I'm having M/S problems, so my reading it is for different reasons, but it might give you some ideas regarding meals so you don't have to take the time to think about it (I know my brain had been on overload since becoming pregnant).  Anyhow, I do remember reading that it is better only take a few bites of ice cream spread out over the day rather than eating a ton of it in one sitting, for example.  I don't think (high amounts of) sugar are ever ideal, pregnant or not.  The book also suggested a bite size candy bar instead of an entire, so maybe try to limit it to one bite size.
  • I would change what you are eating.  I think it will be the best for not only your baby, but also for you.  I was the same way, and have slowly tried to change.  I rarely drink soda, but if I want something "fun" to drink I will find a fruit spritzer or something.  I drink water besides that.

As for the sweets, the way I dwindled down was what sweets I ate.  I started by just giving up candy, and only eating baked deserts.  I then went to all natural deserts, making sure there were no corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners.

I also agree with pp, you should try and substitute fruit for your mid day sweet.  Maybe start by doing chocolate covered fruit.

    Good luck!!!
