Highlighting is ok, but I have read that it is better to wait until your 2nd trimester bc your hormone levels are changing so drastically right now that it can affect the way your hair absorbs the color and it may not take evenly. That was in the little email tips I receive every week.
I'm a colorist and I always tell clients to ask their dr. Some will say fine, some will say not for 3 months, some will say it's safe but you may get queasy from the fumes. There are some Demi low ammonia products available and Loreal just came out with a non ammonia permanent color. Also, the lighter the base color the less PPD, which is what you really want to avoid.

I got highlights at the end of my first trimester and have also had them done since. My OB said it's completely fine, but I would check to see what yours says first.
I've been coloring my hair since the beginning...trust me it would not be pretty right now if I hadn't. lol Like others said, make sure the place is well ventilated and understand that your pg hormones can affect how your color takes. I also try to make sure that I wash my hair as soon as i can, usually the next morning, to get the extra color off my scalp.
