Poll: are you getting a flu shot?

I have never had one before, but I guess this year I may.

Re: Poll: are you getting a flu shot?

  • I've gotten one every year and never had a problem, and never gotten the flu- i work with developmentally delayed individuals and supply teach at a variety of daycares, so i'm surounded by germs and am definetly not gonna take a chance this year!

  • I am undecided, but leaning towards no. Unless my MW makes a compelling argument, I'm not getting one.

  • I've never had one before but I'll be getting one this year.  I'm a home-school teacher and am around kids all day so the risk is just too high for me to ignore.  Good luck with your decision!

  • I didn't answer the poll and will wait and see what my MW says. I've never had one and was not planning on it.

  • Definitely getting the flu shot this year. The vaccine is safe and it's really not worth the risk of getting sick while pg.
  • I never have before but I asked my doctor about it at my last appointment and she said she strongly recommends it.

  • I'm a #2 - don't usually, but will this year.

Flu can cause complications in immuno-suppressed people (like infants and pregnant women). I've heard a few stories that have scared me straight. My doctor is strongly urging it, and my Uncle who is a doctor (and with whom I would trust my life) has also recommended it. There's very little question in my mind that it's the right thing for me to do for myself and my baby.

  • I get one every year. I have asthma, and I don't want to risk getting really sick this year and ending up with pneumonia and possible hospitalization. Just not worth it.

I'm also a massage therapist and work very closely with people, and there are a lot of sick people that come through my clinic during cold and flu season.

  • My doctor strongly urged me to get the flu shot.  I most likely will but will research to make sure I am ok with my decision.

  • Talk to your OB about it.  Mine was pretty adamant so I'll get it.

  • I've never had one, nor have I ever had the flu.  I have worked with kids for 13 years, and have been a teacher for the last 6.  The flu was flying around last year, but I never got it.  I never want to get a shot to prevent the flu, but hubby might make me get the flu shot this year... :(

  • Took my first one last year when 4 of my students went out for multiple weeks with H1N1.

I'm going to talk to my Dr. about it but she probably is going to make me take one.

  • I got one last year bc it was my first flu season at my new job. I work in a VERY busy retail enivronment (we see 20,000 customers a month). I was so afraid of getting something. Well it did just that I was sicker than I have ever been in my life last winter. I was so sick I was almost hospitalized. I have a huge feeling it was linked to the flu shot. I had never had the flu shot before last year and thats when I was the sickest. So no I will not be getting it. I realize that it could have just been dumb luck but I can't help but feel it acutally lowered my immune system, and it just not a risk I am willing to take.
  • At my last OB appointment I asked if I should get one and she said yes and then gave me on at the end of the appointment.  I think you should ask you Dr. about it.  If they give it to you at the OB I think they give you the dead strand.  This year it is the regular flu shot with the H1N1 vaccine in it too.  My arm got sore and the next day I did have flu type symptoms but the were gone the next day and I never got a fever.

  • Nope. I am a teacher and H1N1 went through my school last year. Several of my students got it, but I didn't. I wash my hands constantly, make kids get germX every time they walk in my room, and we sanitize the tables once a day with Chlorox wipes... it works!

When I took microbiology in college, my professor convinced me that the flu shot is bascially worthless. It's based on last year's strain of the flu, and the virus mutates so rapidly that it's a whole new virus by the next year.

I've gotten it once and got sick. So I just don't get it anymore.

  • As long as my doc says it's ok (don't see why not), I'm going to. I never got a flu shot before. But last I had the flu was in 2004, and it hit me hard, I had to go to the ER because my fever was out of control. DH is going to get one as well. I rarely get sick (well, pre-pg), but when I do, it puts me down for the count.
  • I teach first grade. Nuff said! :-) Seriously though...I get one every year and I have never gotten the flu. I will be getting one again this year.
