We use a cheap kitchen trash can that I've had since college. It has a lid, but we don't even use it (see my post about no-stink). We have two pail liners in rotation -- one is Kissa and the other is Natural Baby Co (Grobaby/Grovia).
I dont use a pail but have a large or X large (whatever is the biggest size they make) planetwise hanging wetbag. It hangs on the closet doorknob. I haven't had any complaints. It looked cuter than a pail IMO.

We use a round, stainless steel, kitchen size trash can with a step open lid...inside I have planet wise wet bags. Works great...no smell! I opted for SS because I heard plastic can absorb the smells over time.

This with a laundry bag from Target as the liner.
