frozen bm

I have to go out of town tonight so I thawed some bm out. I realized it smells funny. Not bad but just a weird smell. We use frozen milk a fair amount and I have not noticed this in the past. This is milk from early June. Any thoughts? Is this normal?

Re: frozen bm

  • Yes its normal. As long as it doesn't smell sour or like bad milk, you are fine.

  • Totally normal. If it smells "soapy" it's the lipase in your milk breaking down the fat.  Some LOs won't drink it, others don't mind. If it's really bad (excess lipase in your milk) you can lightly scald your milk before freezing it. This sacrifices some of the nutrients (not much). Talk to your LC if you think you need to do this.
