Preemies

feel like a terrible mother

My lo was born at 26 weeks and has to have his bottles thickened because he was penetrating his airway.  Today I was giving him a bath and I was using a wash cloth to wash his face when he got a mouth full of water.  He started almost choking on it and looked really shocked and frightened and then started crying like crazy.  He didnt turn blue or stop breathing but I am still freaking out.  I am afraid he aspirated the water and I feel awful. Do you think he will be okay? Anyone have this happen to them? He is almost 5 mo. old but only 1 1/2 mo. adjusted.

Re: feel like a terrible mother

  • Both of my girls do this from time to time and they have been just fine. They are called accidents for a reason. You could always call the pedi but they'll probably just tell you to keep a watch out for any possible respiratory infection. Chances are your LO is just fine. Chin up, mama.

  • We have had accidents as well.  It just felt so much easier when we were in the hospital because they would thoroughly check him out.  But at home, if there is an accident, it is so easy to blame yourself--you want the best for them, and then the accident happens.  It is a learning experience.  If anything, if the baby is doing fine right now, I would ask your pediatrician about it at your next appointment.
