Babies: 9 - 12 Months

when did LO start drinking out of cup

I think I am hindering LO drinking out of cup because I rarely offer one. I just always forget and when I do she isn't too interested. When she turned 6 months and we started solids I would offer a shot glass size cup because I'd rather her drink out of a real cup. It went pretty well but again I just wasn't consistent. I have given her a sippy style cup and straw cup so she could have something to take on the go. She can't figure out how to drink out of either of them. Is this normal or is it my fault for not giving her the chance to learn. In other words when did your kiddo figure it out. I'm just feeling guilty for making her fall behind I guess.

Re: when did LO start drinking out of cup

  • Don't stress about it. My DD just turned 1 and just is starting to get the hang of it enough that I can feel like she can actually take a full sippy instead of a bottle. I would say it was about 11 months before things clicked.

  • We gave our DD a straw cup starting at 6 months and she could do it easily by 7.5 months.  She still doesn't really do a regular sippy because I don't give it to her very often because I figure it's just one more thing to wean from.  She'll always need to know how to use a straw.  To practice with the straw you can use your finger to trap liquid in a regular straw and then hold it in her mouth until she starts sucking it out.  I'm sure she'll catch on quick if you just keep giving it to her.
  • DD started drinking out of them well and understanding the tip the cup concept around 9 months. I had been giving her cups since 6 months though.

  • I've been offering cups and sippy cups since about 6 months.  He has really gotten the hang of the sippy over the past couple of weeks, but it's mostly because I just started giving him all his formula in sippies and he had to figure it out or starve :)

He will sort of drink out of a regular cup, but only if it's water (not formula).  Even then it sometimes just spills right out the side of his mouth.

Basically, it's totally normal that she hasn't figured it out at 9 months - mine hadn't either.  Just keep offering it when you think to, and eventually you may just want to go cold turkey like I did!
