How do you store your knives?

We've always kept our knives in a knife block, but today I caught DS on his stepping stool getting ready to take the scissors out of the knife block. I put the whole knife block on top of the fridge, but it can't live there forever. We have cabinet locks on all our lower cabinets and drawers, but only slows him down instead of keeping him out. I need something foolproof.

Re: How do you store your knives?

  • we have them in the knife block on top of a bread box --- so they are too high for Griffin to reach on his feet.  He could reach on his step stool - but he is really good about not going into the kitchen and trying to get things... he's rarely in there alone... and has been warned 100x's not to touch knives b/c they will cut him - he's really good about staying away from thigns we warn him about.

  • Knife block on the counter, but it's pretty far back (in the corner).  There's no stool in there.  I have thought about what to do in a year or two when she's taller.  Probably just have to ditch the block and put them in the cabinet. Idk.

  • We have them on a back corner of the counter. She's never made an effort to get them and she knows that they'll cut her, so I'm not worried about it. She's a super cautious kid.

We have the magnetic cabinet locks that keep the door completely closed and needs to be opened with a magnet "key." They work perfectly for situations like this. We got ours from BRU.

  • We have a magnetic strip hanging up on the side of a cabinet next to our sink that we stick our knives to.

this, they are way to far back for him to reach and he is never alone in the kitchen plus there is no step stool in the kitchen.  if i left him alone in the kitchen there would be food everywhere.

  • We have them in the regular cutlery drawer which DD has regular access to.  She knows they are sharp and hasn't bothered them.

We've actually done very very little baby/child proofing.  She knows some things aren't a good idea to attempt to handle --  and other things?  we just teach her how to handle them properly.   ie)  I have no problem asking her to get my big scissors for me.  She carries them nicely and is careful.  They have to learn how to deal with this stuff some time.   And I think making it taboo adds to the appeal of certain objects.  ;)
