Registry ?

We won't be registering for quite some time still, but DH had a convo about this the other day.  Neither of us are big on cartoon characters (ie Pooh, Elmo, ect.) but we know that my IL LOVE buying character stuff.  With DH's nephew, BIL had talked very briefly about how he didn't care for it, but it was whatever they wanted, and all he got for his LO was Elmo stuff.  Now, another BIL is dating a girl who has had a baby since they've been together, and all they get her is Pooh stuff.

Is there any polite way to not only tell IL's that we don't want this stuff, but to also put it on the registry so we don't end up with a ton of it?  IL's are notorious for buying offline, or giving gifts without receipts and are very upset when we ask for receipts to return items.

Re: Registry ?

  • Yeah I'm not big on characters either, even for 2 year olds...ugh I hate it.  I would simply tell them how you feel, they should understand! Tell them you have your own theme that you feel in love with.

  • I sympathize. My inlaws aren't into characters or anything, but my MIL feels like when she buys something, it's should be something SHE likes, not something WE like. I mean, if those two things happen to intersect (maybe 20 percent of the time) she's thrilled but she doesn't particularly strive for it. I have begged both her and my mother to stick to the practical if they want to buy things for baby. My plan is to register super early - like within the next couple of weeks, but only allow those two have access to it. That way, they can see what we've chosen and shop to their heart's content, but at least they'll have some guidelines. And if that doesn't work, well, we'll still be grateful and know that they're doing it out of excitement about the baby, which is a good thing.

  • I would say pick a theme, I've always loved frogs and told everyone that is our theme, so everyone picked frog stuff and it was great, no characters. I'd go with something and just tell them.
  • Pretend that you love it and say something along the lines of,"OMG, I love it where did you find this!"  then return it for store credit.
