WWYD re: switching to milk (kinda long)

We have been in the process of transitioning to whole milk for the last couple of weeks.  I started out mixing the milk in with his formula and when I got to 2/3 milk, I started just giving him milk in a cup with meals and just formula in his bottles.  He takes 3 bottles of formula a day. This last week, DS got a bout of diarrhea, and so I haven't been giving him milk, and the last couple of days, I have only been giving him 1 bottle of formula before bed and BRAT diet and Pedialyte the rest of the day.  His stools are getting a little better and less frequent, so I'll probably continue BRAT and pedialyte tomorrow.  I would like to just have him on milk now, but do you think I should start the transition process all over since it's been almost a week since he's had any whole milk?  Sorry this is so long...

Re: WWYD re: switching to milk (kinda long)

  • About 1.5 weeks into introducing whole milk DD had a bout of diarrhea as well.  I asked my mom (who watches her while we work) to decrease the amount she was giving DD and I made sure it was only me increasing the milk when I had her on my days off.  I chose not to stop giving her the milk because despite that one time of diarrhea her behavior was normal and she wasn't bothered by it.  Now I can give her about half a tall sippy cup of whole milk and she's fine.

I think now that your DS has already experienced whole milk there isn't a need to start slow again.  Maybe start at the midway point and see how it goes.

  • When DS had a stomach virus and quite a bit of diarrhea, the pediatrician suggested switching to lactose free formula.  He said that your intestines produce a certain enzyme that is needed to break down lactose, and when you've had diarrhea, it sort of "flushes out" all of those enzymes.

He said to wait until DS hadn't had any diarrhea for 2-3 days and then go straight back to the lactose stuff.  So I think you'll be fine going back to what you were doing before!

  • After going without the formula/milk for a few days, I'd say yes. Give your LO milk only moving forward.
