Parenting after a Loss

umbilical cord ?

So Brady lost his today....he is only 6 days old...this normal? Its not bleeding and fell off on his own...the nurse told us when we had to put him under the lights for the night that it helps dry it out faster and it will fall off a little faster...but is this too soon??

I don't remember when DD's fell off but I think it was like a 2 weeks..

Re: umbilical cord ?

  • Our doctor said that 7-14 days is average.... of course Logan's took 20, but that's a different story.  I think if Brady's belly button looks fine, I wouldn't worry about it at all... enjoy giving him a "real" bath.

  • Enjoy it!!!!

Jack's took forever to fall off and I'm a little embarrassed to say that it completely grossed me out.

  • Yes, it is completely normal for it to happen especially if they have been under the lights for a prolong period of time.

  • Logan's had already fallen off by hi first ped appointment at 5 days old
She did put something inside the belly button (silver something or other) to help get out some excess icky stuff.

    She said it was fine

  • Brin's still hasn't fallen off and I want it to! I always feel so uncomfortable trying to change her between the umbilical cord and all the wires she's hooked up to. The nurse did tell me the dryer we kept it the sooner it would fall off.
  • Emberlyn's fell off at five days.  I kinda freaked and called the doc and they said it was fine. It did ooze a bit for the next week, but again, they said it was okay.  She has a perfectly cute belly button now :)
