Cloth Diapering

Benefits of cloth diapers

Hi Ladies,

I?m still TTC,  but cameacross this board, and love the idea of cloth diapers for our future baby. I?mtrying to convince my husband that cloth diapers are a better option thandisposables.  When I brought the idea oftrying them instead of the disposables his response was, ?Cloth diapers aregross. I'd rather just be able to toss the disposables in the trash.?

I have read not only do cloth diapers end up cheaper, but they are free ofchemicals and in turn healthier for your baby and the enviroment. Do any of you know of websites that show hard evidence/studies doneabout the benefits of cloth diapers that I can show him and hopefully changehis mind?

 Thanks!

Re: Benefits of cloth diapers

  • Other ladies on here are better with the hard proof than I am, but my DH was convinced when I pointed out that I could set us up for life (including any future LOs most likely) for $500, while each child will cost $1200-$1500 PER YEAR to use sposies. Assuming you need sposies for 3ish years, for two kids that's close to $10,000.

Depending what brand you choose, sposies average about $100/month, not including wipes and diaper rash cream for all those extra rashes LOs tend to get from sposies.

If you get OS CDs you can use them from the time your LO is about 10lbs until potty training. And if you invest in truly high-quality ones and care for them well they can last you through multiple LOs.

  • I second jillians drawers and I am sure if you start digging into the cloth diapering world you will find a lot of information.

Sometimes it is hard to 'buck the system' and if a person has only seen disposables or heard only horrible stories about how cloth diapering was then they were a child, then there is a chance they wont even want to hear what you have to say about it.

My husband would rather cloth diaper than use disposables. I dont know if it is how easy we have made our system or if it is how he hated seeing our money get thrown away that changed his mind. I do know that he is SUPER EXCITED to not have to take out the stinky diaper pail trash and have to smell of poopy diapers every time he opens up our household trash can.

Good Luck finding the information you are searching for...

  • OK, first of all, tell your husband that you're actually supposed to dispose of poo in the toilet before you throw a disposable diaper in the trash.  It doesn't seem like most sposie-users do this, but it's written on the package and everything.

Here are the pros, in order of how compelling they were to me:

    1) My baby's health.  The DryMax fiasco hadn't happened yet when we decided to CD, but that would certainly be enough to scare me off disposables. The absorbent gel in most diapers is the same crap that was used in tampons for awhile before it was taken out due to, um, HEALTH concerns.  Do you want your baby's skin in constant contact with that stuff?  I don't.

     2)  Cost savings.  I am not a particularly frugal diaper-shopper.  I've spent a bit over $1000 on my stash (but it should last DD and the current peanut until potty training).  I estimate a total cost savings of $3500.

    3)  ... and speaking of potty training ... many people say CD'd babies learn to use the potty quicker than other babies.  Figure it's worth a shot!

    4) Disposables are disgusting.  Every time I use them I'm grossed out.  They stink.  When DD poops, they get all slimy.  They also don't work as well as CDs. I have way more leaks and poosplosions with disposables than with cloth.

As far as I'm concerned, the environmental benefit and the cute factor are just gravy :)

If your DH doesn't get on board ... do it anyway.  I bet he comes around.  My sisters were both completely grossed out when I told them I planned to CD.  But they learned how to use them, and then also used sposies when I had to due to rashes, etc.  Well, one of them is now pregnant with her first child and planning to use cloth.  She was sold on how well they work, the financial aspect, and the cute factor.

  • my husband was against them, i bought them anyways, lol...you dont have to spend a fortune on them, search ebay...we dont buy wipes either, i go to the dollar store and get baby washrags (4 pack for $1, lol) and i wet them with a soap solution and use them...the diaper pail doesnt stink...we never run out and have to go to the store in the middle of the night...husband said when i first started that he wouldnt even change a pee CD, but now that i leave them stuffed and folded on the changing table, he changes the dipes, lol...he wont rinse poop or wash the load of laundry, thats "my" job, lol...but it doesnt take much...

    1.) money saver

2.) time saver (no late night runs to the store for more diapers)

    3.) no diaper rash

    4.) no stinky diaper pail
