s/o telling your boss

I never understand why bosses are shocked to learn their employees are pregnanct.  If a woman is of "child bearing age", it should never be a shock.  And if it is, I don't feel like it is appropriate for them to show that emotion to the employee.

Re: s/o telling your boss

  • I agree.  My boss was happy and excited for DH and I the first time around.

But I'm skeered this time around.  The people in this office kind of have a "2u2 is Insanity" type of opinion.  It will be interesting whenever I work up the courage to tell him.

  • My boss really didn't seem to care, other than saying, "congratulations." When I told him he was like, "oh, okay." Stick out tongue

But I agree that they should try to hold their emotions inside if they are shocked about it. Their employee might feel anxious about their job security (among other things) if their boss shows the wrong emotional reply.

  • My boss' reply was "I was starting to wonder if that Catholic wedding I attended was real or not."  Then he calculated if my kid would be helping to pay for his retirement.
  • I agree. I understand it might cause a complication for them, but people are allowed to build their families and have lives outside of their work.

I'm always kind of shocked to read that a boss was unprofessional enough to react or comment badly to a pregnancy announcement.

  • I don't really get that either, and they should keep it to themselves. With DD I worked for a doctor and his wife and the wife and I were good friends so I told her and she just blurted it out to her husband right in front of me. I was taken back because I asked her not to tell him and that I would at the end of the day, but she didn't make it that far. Looking back I should have told him first but I was scared and wanted to see her reaction first. He didn't seem thrilled and when it came time for me to leave to be a SAHM he def voiced his opinion about not wanting me to go and how it would be good for me to keep working?! That is a matter of opinion and not for a boss to decide.

  • My boss is pretty funny and generally let's things pop out of his mouth without thinking so his first words were "oh crap".  But the very next thing he was telling me about was his two kids and how my DS was going to love the LO.

I can understand being nervous about telling people - maybe not wanting to the the center of attention but I feel bad for someone who doesn't have a good enough relationship with their boss to be casual about telling them.

  • I agree totally.

  • My boss is a 60 year old gay guy -- totally can't relate. But he really likes me (and vice versa) and is always "teasing" me that I better not get pregnant. I think he'll deal once I tell him, but I'm putting it off as long as possible. It's a compliment, in a way, I guess.

  • I agree. I had a boss who once told me at a review that I was a good employee. Then when I explained that I was  pregnant. He told me he did not know what to do with me? (Excuse me what does this have to do with you?) Anyways three weeks later I was fired. I missed two days of work due to bleeding during the first part of the pregnancy. Since this is a right to work state I could not prosecute. Talk about sucking. Anyways, glad I don't work now and can stay at home.
