Cloth Diapering

Best fold for prefolds??

I bought a whole bunch more infant/newborn prefolds and Thirsties Duo covers.

However, the lady at the shop kept telling me that I would need a full supply of covers (12-24?!) if I was EBFing. What have you found is the best fold to keep in BF poops?

Is it a good idea to use snappis with my diapers in addition to the cover? (Seems like it would have more coverage that way).

Thank you for the help!!

Re: Best fold for prefolds??

  • We really liked tri-folding with the duo covers. Our prefolds were the sized kind (Diaperrite/ GMD) so they fit in really well. However, we tri-folded when she was older and didn't have bowel movements as frequently. If you do tri-fold, it's likely that you'll need to change out the cover more often.

Jelly roll fold is what I commonly see other moms recommend for containment of nb poop - that way you wouldn't need nearly as many covers...maybe only 8?

I was just thinking that someone would have some alternative to changing my baby's cover ever bowel movement.

How about if you use snappis and a sized-cover, do you think it would help with newborn BFP?

  • If you do newspaper/tri-fold, you will need to change covers every time. But we never had more than 6 covers. We always used angel fold because we prefered it so much more than jelly roll. It holds well. Definitely get a couple of snappis. You won't get leak protection without one.

Do you know what the best fold for a little boy would be?

  • Regardless of the fold, I have never heard of needing more than 6-8. But then again I haven't put this into practice, so what do I know!!?!?!

    We have 8 covers.

Well, I somehow think the lady who owned the shop assumed my husband and I for being naive... Oh, she doesn't know about my researching and "Bump consultations", haha!

But it's alright, I walked out with a good amount... Erm, not 12-24, that's for sure, hehe.

  • We use angel wing fold w a Snappi and Thristies cover for EBF poo and its only gotten on the cover a little bit 2 times. We have 6 covers, but defiantly could get by with less.

Oh gosh, your response is a lifesaver, thank you so much! What would be your number of infant/newborn prefold recommendations?

  • Yeahhhhh, that store owner just wanted more of your money Smile I had five covers when DS was a newborn, and that was PLENTY. I could have gotten away with less. 24 covers? I can't believe she'd even suggest that.

As for prefold recommendations, I have 38 of them. That is plenty to wash every other day and still have enough to get through a third day if I'm lazy about putting them away Smile I would say at least 24, more if you can swing it, especially in the early days when they poop SO much.

Oh, sorry, I should mention that I use the angel wing fold too. When DS was smaller and I had to fold down the rise, I did the fold-down in the front. It worked reasonably well for poop containment -- the bigger poops did get on the cover, but the smaller ones stayed put.

  • I use angel wing and jelly roll, depending on my mood.

I've actually JUST started actually using a snappi. Before I was lazy and just doing an angel-wing fold and holding it onto her with a cover. My prefolds are getting a lot more love now that she's outgrowing a lot of the newborn diapers, and I don't have my new stash in yet. But I definitely get better poop containment using the snappi!

I have a dozen of the prefolds I'm using now, but I use other diapers as well. I can generally go two days.
