Pre-School and Daycare

Anyone familiar with milk/dairy sensitivity?

Last week at DD's 3 year check up, pedi noted that she had lost weight and wanted her to gain some, so I switched her milk to 2%.  Ever since, she has been having diarrhea every day.  She also gets it whenever she has ice cream lately.

Called pedi today and talked to a nurse who thinks she has a dairy sensitivity, and she recommended possibly trying goat's milk, rice milk, or lactaid.  First I'm going to see if we go back to 1% and don't let her have ice cream if she'll go back to normal.

Just wondering if anyone's been through this and has any advice or info. for me.  Thanks!

Re: Anyone familiar with milk/dairy sensitivity?

  • My DS2 has a milk protein sensitivity.  Since he is BF, I had to cut out all dairy in my diet.  If I do have any dairy, he will projectile vomit, have mucosy poops (sorry, TMI), and get a diaper rash.  He would also get super gassy.

I would recommend cutting out all dairy and see how she does.  Then maybe try introducing things back in slowly to see if she can tolerate any dairy products.

  • My step-mom is lactose intolerant and the same thing happens to her. If she wants to have ice cream, she takes some over the counter pill beforehand and she's just fine. I don't know the name of it, but maybe the pedi would know if there's a children's version.

Ditto this.  Although, you could try lactaid and see what happens first.  If she's still having problems, then I would use soy or almond milk.  Goat's milk is too close to cow's milk, although some kids are ok with it.  I've never had the guts to try.

  • I recently just switched Rory to almond milk to see if it would help solve her hard BM problems. She still gets dairy from other sources but I don't let her drink milk. She LOVES the almond milk. I'd ask your doctor about switching to that. I'm not a big fan of soy and I agree that goat's milk is too close to cow's milk. I've never tried Lactaid.
  • DS is allergic to the protein Whey in Cow's milk along with other things. We tried him on both Goats Milk and Soy and he had reactions to both. He uses Rice Dream Original Enriched (as do I). Rice cheese or vegetable cheese. margarine made with only vegetable oil. Coconut milk yogurt (The brand is called So Delicious) (They also have Soy Delicious if they can tolerate soy) For Ice cream and ice cream products we use Purely Decadent (sp) which is also made from coconut milk. His is not a severe/ life threatening allergy (anaphalaxic) but he will have pojectile vomiting, bloody diahrrea, runny nose and mucus in his stool if ingested. He also does not have skin reaction to it (He can use lotion/hand wash with milk protein in it) We've seen an allergy doctor and gastroenterologist since he was 3 months.

He has been retested at ages 1 & 3. Many children who have a milk allergy ( not lactose intolerance) will outgrow it by age 3. If they don't outgrow it by then, there is still the chance that they could but the pecentage is much smaller. If the parents have the allergy and the child also has it, it is much less likely for the child to outgrow it (as in our situation). There is also a higher probability of each of my following children having the milk allergy as well. Sorry I don't have to percentages off hand but I can get them for you if you'd like just PM me.
  • Thanks, everyone!  Great info - I will have to look into some of the things you guys mentioned.  I appreciate it!!!
