Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Getting ready for D&C Thursday....no eating at all???

My surgery is scheduled for 2:30 and I have to be at the hospital at 1 pm. They told me not to eat anything after midnight the day before. Not even water!! That's insane! I think I'm planning on working for half a day and leaving early for the surgery.

I didn't realize you couldn't eat anything for that long!

Re: Getting ready for D&C Thursday....no eating at all???

  • That is a long time. My surgery was at 7:30 AM and I was told the same time as you, midnight. You should only have to refrain for 6 hours or so, not over 12. Double check with your doctor and good luck! I could stand not eating but I would be dying of thirst by then.

ETA: The good thing is that once they hook you up to an IV the fluids will help quench your thirst. Have a huge meal the last night, and a snack before bed!

  • Those are pretty standard surgery rules. It sucks! I remember when I had uterine surgery, a few years ago, I couldn't eat anything after midnight and the surgery was in the afternoon. They just want your stomach as empty as possible, so you don't get sick to your stomach during the surgery. You will probably get some crackers and juice in recovery.

  • I had my D & E on a Thursday in the afternoon with the same rules. I coped by the iv fluids they gave me and taking lots of naps while at the hospital.

  • Our schedule was the same as the OP and yep, it sucks. Having to dissolve meds in your mouth (cytotec?) is especially not fun. But, once you get hooked up to IVs, you'll feel more hydrated, and afterwards you have cookies and juice to look forward to.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. I've had two D&Cs and the last one was around 1 or something. It was pretty late. I took off of work the whole day and slept as late as I could. That made it easier. They didn't make me take any medicine before like PP did. I didn't get any juice and cookies afterwards, either, though!

  • I wish I had something happy to tell you...but my surgery was at 2:00 and I got the same information about not eating after midnight. It downright sucked! Make sure that you eat something with a lot of protein right before midnight. I did that and I believe that helped. The thing that was the hardest for me was the no water thing...I drink SoOoO much usually - my throat was very, very dry that morning/early afternoon.

I'm so sorry you have to do this. If you are able to take the whole day off...I would recommend it. It was an emotional day for me and I'm glad I did not have to work. I slept longer (so to offset the no eating thing!) and took it easy.

    Keep up updated!

I'm jealous! My d*mn doctor (who I love dearly most of the time) made me take Cytotec up my butt!!!! Oh I was horrified!!!! They didn't want me to eat or drink but she really wanted me to take some right before the D&C. So mean, so very very mean!!! Embarrassed

  • This is one of DH's pet peeves - that, no matter what time your surgery, they tell you not to eat after midnight. Like you're a gremlin!! Mine is scheduled for Thursday, too, but at 11:30. Even with that time, I'm going to be starving. Definitely check with your doctor to see if you can have anything that morning. You should be able to. What about people having 6am surgeries who only go 6 hours without anything??
  • Mine was at the same time with the same instructions. I took the morning to sleep late and be with my thoughts. Maybe work will be a good distraction, but if possible, you might consider taking the time for yourself - it's kind of a rough brain day.

PS: I'm in NYC, where is your surgery?
