Does anyone have experience taking Citalopram (Celexa) or Anafranil during pregnancy?

I just found out I'm pregnant and am on citalopram for anxiety.  I am living in Europe, so I can't consult an OB in the U.S.  My shrink suggested Anafranil, but said it can cause headaches and other problems.  Safefetus.com listed both drugs as class C, so I'm not sure what to think.  Going of citalopram right now is not an option as I'm finishing up this job and under major stress before we move back to the U.S.  I would appreciate your thoughts.  Thanks!

  • My GP put me on Citalopram the same day I talked to him about getting pg.  I'm no longer taking it because it didn't work for me, but he said it shouldn't be a problem.

  • I went off Citalopram to TTC because I was told it was not safe. However, an extreme amount of anxiety isn't safe either, just wanted to let you know my experience. Isn't there a doctor over there you could consult?
  • i was taking celexa when i got pregnant with DS.  my OB told me it is only a category C because there were no real studies on it in pregnant women, not because there was any evidence it was at all harmful.  anyway, i went off it in the first tri and was put back on in the middle of the second, and took it throughout my pregnancy and while breastfeeding.  my OB reassured me that it was much more important to keep my anxiety at bay than to worry about any possible side effects of the drug.  and my son is currently a perfectly healthy, well adjusted, intelligent child.  so if you need to be taking it and it works for you, it is best to stay on it.  i will add that this was over two years ago, so maybe there is more data on the actual drug that i am not aware of.  best of luck!
