How long does it take to receive birth certificate??

my son was born in 2008, we received his birth certificate and SS, both in the mail, within 2 weeks after he was born.  My daughter is one month old now and so far we've only received her SS 2 weeks ago.  I'm wondering how long does it usually take to get a birth certificate for a newborn?  And do we still receive the birth certificate in the mail or we need to go pick it up?

I remember receiving my DS #1's a lot sooner (also 2008).  This time it took 11 weeks to receive the birth certificate.  I actually called the hospital after about 8 weeks and they said that it takes 8-10...I was getting close to calling again, but it finally came.

Mine came in the mail within 3 weeks, but I live in Steuben county in the Southern tier. There's not as many births as Erie or Monroe county. We couldn't add her to insurance without the birth certificate, and we only had one month post-birth to add, so I don't know what we would have done with an 11 week wait!
