February 2011 Moms

Christmas Travel?

We normally travel to California for Christmas and was wondering if anything knew if travel during the third trimester was recommended?  Our due date is February 11 and it's our first baby.  We live in Colorado so it's about a two hour flight.  I will of course talk to my doctor about it the next time I see him but am curious to hear what others think and if anyone had any experience.

Thanks!

Re: Christmas Travel?

  • Usually you can travel until 36 weeks.  I hope I can because I want to go to Sedona in December!

  • I'm so glad all mine and DH's family are in the same town so we never have to worry about traveling during the holidays. But it does make for a bit of a busy and stressful holiday season with having to visit two homes for each holiday! We've managed to split up Christmas and Thanksgiving. One year it's Thanksgiving with my fam, Christmas with his, and the next year we switch! But that will most likely change after LO is born. I want to have some holiday memories of our own in our own home.

  • I would think it wasn't recommended.  We usually drive (from Indiana) to Alabama every Christmas but are not this year.  Its a 10 hour drive from my house to my brothers and I just don't think I'll be comfortable enough to handle it, so we are going for Thanksgiving instead.  Its only a month earlier, b ut hopefully it will be better?

  • My Doctor told me not to travel past 34 weeks and to try to stay close after 30 weeks.

EDIT: we're hosting Christmas at our house for this very reason. I would not be comfortable going anywhere that far along.

  • we were discussing this over the weekend....my fiances family will be 4 hours away and mine lives 3 hours away. Not sure I want to sit in a car that long so close to my DD.

Christmas will put you at around 33 weeks.

    .

I was put on bed rest with my son at 33 weeks. Really I think you are just going to have to wait and see how things are going. I was fine at 32 weeks then all of a sudden pre-e hit hard and that was it, bed rest till delivery.

  • I already asked about travel during the end of December, and my dr suggested that we don't travel by plane or far away (car) starting at week 32.  Being its our first, I have no clue what to expect, so I'll just hang close to home.
Is it possible to travel home after the the baby is born and you are on mat leave?

  • I'm due February 9th and my doctor told me just to not travel after the new year. I'd assume that different doctors have different preferences.

  • As of now we are planning on going to Iowa at Christmas (about a 7 hour drive for us) and I'll be 32 weeks on Christmas day.  Assuming all is well, the dr said it should be fine but we plan to adjust accordingly if necessary.  We're making the same drive at Thanksgiving so if its too uncomfortable then, we'll likely have to skip Christmas at my parents this year.
  • I'd say no even if your OB was okay with it. The pressure in the cabin can send a woman into labor, especially later on but there have been cases where it happened at 7 1/2 months and on. I just wouldn't want to chance it, you know? Not to mention it'll be really hard on your body. I'd miss this year if I could and promise to come next year with an adorable baby in tow.

Or, like was suggested earlier, you can invite a few family to your home if it's big enough to accommodate them. I'm going to invite my dad and step mom to come see us this Christmas, they're in FL and I really miss them. DH's mom and gramma are too sick/physically incapable to fly. Darn. Wink
