Has your LO ever cried so hard they can't catch their breath?

I know that I have a child who probably gets hurt a lot more than most kids, but today M tripped and hit her forehead on the floor (a rug on the tile).  She started crying and wouldn't breathe, turned blue and passed out for a few seconds.  It was SOO scary.  I was freaking out when she wouldn't take a breath, freaked even more when she started turning blue, and about lost it when her body went limp and her eyes rolled back.

She's done the no breathing thing before and we can usually make her catch her breathe by blowing in her face, but I mean it seems like it's happened too many times.

Have/does your LO do this?  I am wondering if it's something I should bring up with the neurosurgeon. (I am going to call in the morning just to let them know about her hitting her head.)

Thanks!

  • MY DC have not done this but my cousin who I used to babysit often did this a lot as an infant and toddler.  It used to scare the crap out of me.  But i would bring it up witht he neurosurgeon just to sure.  That is so scary, glad she is ok now.

  • I was going to suggest the blow in the face trick.  GMIL swears that DH's uncle would do it and pass out.  She finall took him to the ped and they told her to blow in his face.  I have never had this problem, but it sounds common.

  • Just a few weeks ago, my good friend's 14 mo pinched her finger in the dishwasher and cried so hard that she couldn't catch her breath, started to turn blue, and then completely passed out in her mother's arms. My friend said it was the scariest moment she's ever had - her DD was completely limp and unresponsive in her arms for about 15 seconds.

She lives across the street from a firefighter and he said just to watch DD closely for the rest of the day and she should be fine.

Maybe you could call one of M's specialists and let them know what happened.

And I'm so sorry - that must have been absolutely terrifying.

  • DD #1 did this one time when she was about 2.5yrs.  She was trying on shoes @ a shoe store and her and another girl collided in the store.  DD fell and hit her head (it didn't appear hard, but it must have been) and when I picked her up she was screaming.  I tried to calm her down, but she lost conciousness for about a minute (seemed like FOREVER)!  She turned blue, went limp...the scariest thing I ever experienced in my life.

DD #2 had issues w/ pain when she was younger and she would do this too.  She would turn blue and it always looked like she had trouble breathing.  We took her to the emergency room twice, and one of the doctors told us that their are many kids who have a difficult dealing w/ pain and they cause themselves to hyperventilate and in turn...they turn blue from struggling to breathe properly.  He said he's seen this happen w/ quite a few children (his own son would do this and pass out from it).  He told us that once they get older it's helpful to try and find methods to calm them, but usualy they grow out of it.

I seriously know how scary it is...and I hope she learns to self-soothe quickly so that you can have some peace of mind!

  • It's relieving to know it's happened to others, eventhough it sucks.

  • Carson has never done this but based on the replies it sounds common.  I have read posts about it in the past too.  I would definitely bring it up to her docs.  Doesn't make it any less terrifying.  I am sorry Britt but so glad she is okay.....((((((hugs mama)))))
  • My daughter was always crying until she threw up.  Forunately now for the most part she is past it, but once in a while if she isn't feeling well or has a lot in her stomach, it is just the catalyst for her to vomit.  It's no fun.  I have heard of kids holding their breath, but that has got to be scary for her to pass out.  I'd ask the pedi about it, even just for suggestions to get her to calm down faster before she gets to the point of passing out.
  • That sounds so scary!!! This has never happened to P, but I've heard other mothers tell similar stories. Definitely bring it up with M's doctors. Hugs honey!
