sleeping pills?

I have never been a great sleeper, but most nights now I am lucky to get 3-4 hrs of sleep. I have been using Tylenol PM for about 5 nights now and am still not getting much sleep. (Took it at 10:30 pm tonight and here it is, 11:45, and I am still wide awake.) I am going to talk to my dr about it at my appt on Tuesday, but was wondering if any of you are taking something and if it really helps you sleep?

Re: sleeping pills?

  • Ive been told to take nothing but regular strength tylenol. No xtra strength, PM or Cold. They contain something in them that makes the baby's heart race. I hope you talked to your Dr. first before taking that.

  • I never had to take it, but my doctor told me Tylenol PM is fine. The only additive is diphenhydramine (Benadryl). It's possible that is having an opposite affect on you. Sometimes benadryl makes people more alert than drowsy.

I have had a lot of difficulty in the past (and while pregnant) establishing a restfull night and sleep schedule (probably because of the random night shifts I work). I like to try taking a nice warm bath or hot shower and drinking a cup of non-caffinated hot chocolate. Usually that combo helps me get to sleep and rest. Maybe someone else has some other ideas. Sleep deprivation sucks. Good luck!

Tylenol extra strength just has a higher dose of Acetaminophen per pill and tylenol pm has benadryl. Both meds are on my doctors safe list and on multiple other safe lists I looked up.

You're right about Tylenol cold though, there are multiple drugs added in that are not considered safe for pregnant women.

  • My doc also said that extra strength tylenol and tylenol PM are ok.  But I do know a couple of friends that got a low dose sleeping pill from their doc.  It's worth asking about.
  • I've read that Unisom is ok, but I'm not entirely sure that's a sleeping aid. You can always check with your doctor.
  • I am also on Ambien. It works great and my OB said its perfectly safe during pregnancy.

  • I'm like you and have never been a great sleeper.  My OB told me Gravol was safe to take.  I haven't started taking any yet though...  Good luck!! : )
  • unisom works wonders for me and it is safe.

  • Tylenol PM has the same active ingredient (diphenhydramine) for sleep that benadryl and unisom have and unisom combined with vitamin b is an accepted remedy for morning sickness. I have taken Tylenol pm and Unisom to help me sleep on occasion. If Tylenol PM isn't helping, I agree a conversation with your OB re: RX sleeping aids couldn't hurt.

  • This is not entirely accurate. There are two types of unisom. One type (the gels) has the same active ingredient as benadryl. This will not do anything for morning sickness. The other type (the tabs) has a different ingredient and is the one that is effective with B6 for the morning sickness.

If benadryl does not work, then using the unisom gels will not work either. Try the unisom tabs.
