Can't shake this cough! Tips?

I've been coughing a LOT since Tuesday night. It's not completely dry, but not really phlegm-y either. On my list of OTC ok'd by the doc, Robitussin DM is on there. It helps lessen the frequency of coughs so I can at least sleep, but of course, it just comes back. I don't really want to keep taking medicine (plus, it's a nasty taste that I have a hard time getting past when I feel sick right now). And drinking water every minute isn't an option, lol.

Anyone have any home remedy tips?

ETA: I do have an appt on Tuesday, if anything, will talk with the doc then. But I'm so achy from coughing all day long, with or without medicine!

  • I have a cough too, but I'm pretty sure it's allergies.  I'm using it as an excuse to eat as many popsicles today :).

  • i have a cold too.  i refuse to take meds for it b/c i know there is no cure for the cold and b/c i belive my immune system knows how to fight it best.

i know just enough about the meds to not want to take them, for example, robutussing dm contains dextromethorphan, which is chemically related to opiates.  it is probably fine to take some, but i am really conservative when it comes to meds and i personally would rather suffer through it.  also i wasn't so bad that i couldn't sleep.  the dr basically told me yesterday that i was crazy and a little cold medicine was safe and wasn't going to hurt LO.  :o)

stay hydrated and use a humidifier (or sit in the bathroom with the shower running).  the steam/water will losen the phlem that is making you cough.  then you can cough it out.  it doesn't last a long time, but it makes me feel better temporarily.  good luck!

  • Got one! For my work, I drive around from house to house and I've had at least 3 Hispanic families tell me about a great home remedy for a cough/cold.

Using a blender, you blend - honey, a bit of water, garlic, ginger, and onion. Strain it so you get only the juice in a jar, you can keep it in the fridge, take 3 spoonfuls per day. I haven't had to make it yet, but they said they swore by it when pregnant since they were too trying to avoid medicine if possible. May not taste great but I surely would/will do it if needed. They said it'll dry everything up.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! Yeah, normally I avoid medicines (pre-pg too) as well, but when I can't sleep, I give in so I can get some rest to be able to fight it.

That home remedy sounds interesting, and I'll look into giving it a try. I'm up for anything!
