XP: Have thrush - What can we do until Monday?

I just discovered white patches in my LO's mouth.  My boobs are KILLING me but there aren't any white patches on my nips.  What can I do until we can get to the dr on Monday?  Do I keep breastfeeding him, or would it be better to pump and bottle feed?  Will I need to get to the OB to get something for myself or will it clear up with whatever they give LO?

TIA!

  • Is there a walk-in clinic you could go to?  I wouldn't leave thrush. I've never had it, but I know it can get really awful for both you and your LO.

  • it would be better to keep breastfeeding i think, if you pump and bottle feed then you would have to sterlize the bottle everytime.

The bottle and all your pump parts, it sucks!  The LC recommended Monistat or Lotrimin for me the first time I had thrush.  Once I got through to the MW they gave me Nystatin cream, but the Monistat worked better honestly.  I ended up needing Diflucan.  There's nothing over the counter I can think of for LO besides the gentian violet, but I've never used it so I can't give much advice on that.  Maybe call the on call pedi and see what they say?  I know with the LOs their mouth can get really sore and they may refuse to eat.

  • Gentian Violet works wonders. Lucy had thrush and I luckily didn't get it. We gave her the Gentian Violet for 3 days, 3 times a day (per pedi's orders) and it cleared itself up in no time. You can find it at any Walgreens/CVS.

if you use this beware, its really messy.

  • Another alternative to the gentian violet is grapefruit seed extract.  I don't know if it's AS effective, but it doesn't stain :)  I was using it for milk blisters, but when doing a little more research I found it's also recommended with thrush:

Basically 10 drops of GSE in 1 oz of distilled water applied every hour.  Obviously more time consuming than the GV, I guess, but it worked for me until it got into my ducts and I needed diflucan.  He recommends swabbing it in the baby's mouth prior to nursing and to the nipple after nursing.  I got the GSE at a whole foods store.
