Pregnancy Gingivitis!

I went to the dentist yesterday for my semi-annual cleaning.  As of last week, the right upper side of my gums are extremely sensitive and red, so I told the dentist about it.  After examining them, he said I have pregnancy gingivitis.  Of course it completely grossed me out.  Anytime you hear the word ?gingivitis? it is never good.  I am very good at flossing and brushing, so I don?t know how I developed this.  He said it was due to hormones, but I did not have this issue with my first pregnancy.  As of now, I have to brush 3 times a day with a special toothpaste and rinse with a non-alcoholic mouth wash.  I already brush twice a day, floss and rinse with Act.  I guess I have to brush more frequently now.  I am just very embarrassed and don?t want to tell this to anyone.  Have any of you dealt with this?  If so, did it go away after you had the baby?

Re: Pregnancy Gingivitis!

  • I had it last pregnancy. I went in for a cleaning and OMG it was painful and I was bleeding. Yuck!

Nothing to be embaressed about. A lot of pregnant ladies get this issue. I'm due for my cleaning, but I'm waiting until I deliver because it was so painful last time.

You might be a little sore from your cleaning, if you swish some warm salt water for a minute, it helps SO MUCH!

  • I have a touch of this in one spot. My dentist has me doing the same as you, as well as chewing baking soda gum after meals. They also are doing cleaning every three months instead of six.

  • I'm sure I've got this - gums are very painful, so I'm just brushing a lot more frequently, trying to steer clear of sugar, using Listerine, and if I need to, warm salt water.  It's been helping a LOT.  My next cleaning is in December, and I am flipping dreading it, especially after my last one at 2 months.  UGH.  Don't be embarrassed! It's common!
  • Don't be embarrassed, this is very common in pregnancy. My dad is a dentist so he's been on me to make sure I am diligent about my oral hygiene!  All the soft tissues in our body get inflamed because of pregnancy hormones and the gums are especially susceptible to irritation.

  • I don't have gingivitis, but my gums are very swollen.  I went to the dentist 2 weeks ago, and she also suggested the non alcoholic mouth wash (I use Crest pro rinse or something).  I bleed nightly when I floss, but she said it would go away post pregnancy-we will see.
