Boar's Head?

I know it's not supposed to be good to eat deli meats but what about healthier meats like Boar's Head? I'm dying for a homemade Italian sub!

Re: Boar's Head?

  • Idk what Boar's Head is, but if you can have the sub toasted, then it's fine.

  • If you want it, get it.  Just don't get it from a flithy deli.

Really?  how is that possible?  It's a brand of cold cuts.

  • Boar's Head is the only brand I'll eat right now but only because I'm picky at the moment.  I say go for it.

LOL sorry, never heard of it! I think we mostly bought Sara Lee when I lived with my parents, years ago. Since moving out, I don't think I've ever bought deli meat... Hmm...

    I think it's regional.

  • Boar's Head is better for you because it has fewer additives.  However, additives are not the reason people freak out about deli meant, Listeria is.  If you're buying it from a reputable place you should be fine, no matter what kind you get.  If you don't mind paying a little extra, Boar's Head is probably a good way to go (although it doesn't stay "fresh" as long as more heavily processed meat).

  • I was told by the dietician aT my high risk OB office for GD (with my first pregnancy) that fresh sliced deli meats (like Boar's Head) are fine. Its the pre-packaged ones that aren't good because they use nitrates to keep it fresh longer.

  • If you heat it up it's OK.

  • Just make sure it doesn't share a deli case with unpasteurized cheese. That's what my doctor told me to watch out for.
  • I miss Boar's Head meats.  We don't have them out here (Colorado). :(
