NTR: Question about Subbing

My SIL is convinced that she is going to be a sub. I was telling her that I thought you needed to have a degree to sub, but she is saying you don't.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Re: NTR: Question about Subbing

  • It depends on the state...in Ohio you have to have a bachelor's degree.

  • Depends on the state. In Indiana you have to have something like 30 college credit hours in any field.

  • In NJ you need 60 college credits in any field
  • It also depends on the district.  My school district is so overwhelmed by subs that it started saying you have to have a teaching license to sub.
  • WI you need a teaching license or a subbing license.  But, you would definitely have to see the state.

  • In my district, you need a BA to sub.   Depending on whether you have a BA, MA or teaching certificate changes how much you get paid (least to most).

  • In Colorado you have to have a Bachelors Degree.  DH was filling out paperwork to be a sub right before he got his current job :)

  • In CT it depends on the school district... but the vast majority of districts will only take subs with a B.A. I believe it can be in any subject.

In order to be a long-term sub (like with the same class for weeks at a time, covering for maternity leaves, etc) you have to have a teaching cert. in the appropriate subject.
