As many of you know- I watch 2 LOs in my home 2x a week. The older is going to be 3, the younger is going to be 1. The younger should still be napping 2x a day and according to his mom he does nap 2x a day @ home- the morning nap happening ~ 8 am, which is when he gets dropped off- so I try to put him down soon after he gets dropped off, but it hasn't been working and he's been crying a lot and I am not even sure if he's getting much of a nap.
Have any of your DCP shared "napping" secrets with you?
He naps in a pack'n'play in a room by himself (I have PNPs set up in our 2 extra bedrooms for them, so they have privacy/quiet to nap in.) Maybe he's still getting used to this set up, but any ideas would be appreciated!
Re: Moms w/ ~ 1 yr olds in DC ? for you
DD isn't 1 year yeat, but the 6 babies in her room at DC start turning 1 next month through December. They've had the babies on a 2-hr naps 2x/day for a couple of months now. They all sleep in a separate room that is completely dark and has a sound machine (plays rain sounds). DD has never napped like this at home. If for any reason one of the kids won't sleep, they have them play quietly in the main room (lights are dimmed there while the babies are napping in the crib room).
I think in this case the secret is the darkness. DD's room isn't completely dark, so think we need to get some blackout shades, but she does listen to the same sound machine during naps and at night. Also, the kids are very active during the day- lots of crawling/cruising all over the place, lots of stuff to explore. I think DD gets more tired at DC than she does at home.
It could be the new setup/getting used to a new schedule, etc., but it sounds like the mom may be stretching the truth? How long does he nap each time at home?
He might be ready to drop that nap - or at least take it later in the morning. Ella dropped her morning nap around 11 months - b/c it was just getting worse and worse - daycare just powered through a few days and kept her awake longer and very active and she took a much longer better afternoon nap. She also kept taking a morning nap at home for another month or two - since we are boring and there's not nearly as much excitement at home.
I would also think at this age, he knows that everybody else is still awake and playing and he wants to hang out too.
Thanks for the feedback- I don't think he's doing (2) 2 hr naps- that would be awesome though!
The one room w/ a PnP is almost pitch black- it's where the 3 yr old naps- I put the younger in there today and it was not any better than in the other room. At their house they share a room, so maybe I should put both PnPs in there and have them nap together in the afternoon the way they do @ their house.
The mom claims he goes down for his am nap @ 8 am, which is when he gets dropped off- I am wondering if it would be weird/out of line to ask her to put him down next week to just get him into a routine of hopefully taking good naps here?
She made it seem simple, just pull him into your chest w/ his arms and head down and that he would go down w/o a fuss, but this has not been the case.
Also he clearly still needs this nap, he's not a happy camper the rest of the day w/o it (unless he's eating and I can only feed the kid so much!) and developmentally he definitely still needs it.
ETA- if I try to power through, he will literally be laying his head down on the ground while playing. He just started crawling up on his knees, and is barely/rarely cruising.
Sean was down to one nap a day starting right around a year. It seems strange that a one year old would be ready for a nap so early in the morning to me. Unless he is getting up at like 4 am?
The nap room at his DC is quiet, separate from the play area, and they have a CD player in there and is darker. He is quite the trooper about going down for naps as long as he is diapered and well fed. sounds like you have a good set up, he may just be ready to be dropping that first nap.
Have you tried letting him nap in a swing or a bouncey chair... or even his car seat?
I think it may have more to do with the fact that he is getting to your house right at his nap time. The upheaval/excitement from his normal schedule is probably messing with his ability to settle himself down to nap right after arriving. Would she let you try putting him down later, like at 9?
This is what I was thinking or that he's falling asleep in the car and thinks thats enough nap for the morning.
Emily cut out her morning nap around 14 months at daycare but kept it at home for another month-6 weeks.
