Infertility

Update and Question (long)

I had my post-op appointment today with my RE. He gave me the green light to take Provera in two weeks and Clomid starting day 3 of that cycle. I am excited and anxious at the same time. I know that so many of you have gone through way more at this point in time, but I am excited to finally get the show on the road.

My next question is definitely NOT meant to be offensive. I am just wondering what you all think. I know that Clomid alone does not always work, however my RE seems somewhat hopeful since DH's SA have improved. The planner in me figured out that if we got lucky and Clomid did work, that November would be the best time for me to get KU. I am a teacher, and if I get pregnant in November I would deliver in August and would have 6 weeks off prior to delivery (summer break) and then normal maternity leave after the break - so a total of like 12 weeks. If I were REALLY luck and got pregnant first cycle with Clomid, I would only have 6 weeks off because maternity leave and summer break over lap. So, my question is do you think I should just wait until November, or go ahead and try this next cycle?

I want to stress that I know you all have probably been through way more than me, and I really do not want to ask a question that upsets anyone. Thanks for your support and answers, you all have made my journey much more bearable.

P.S. I am loving all the pics of lucky socks! Everyone has been getting cute stuff! :-)

Re: Update and Question (long)

  • My advice is don't wait - you can never schedule these things how you want and later you might wish you hadn't wasted that time.

  • No offense taken.  :)  To me, it is such a double edged sword. I dont have any kind of cycle without meds, so it is *nice* (I use the term loosely) to be able to "plan" a cycle. When it happens, etc. We are not bogged down by "when am I going to O?" or "when am I going to get AF?" because it's just not going to happen without meds. We can pick when we cycle. So if DH has a business trip, we can work around that. But it sucks to have a body that NEVER works. I think most ladies on here will say that we all want a baby so bad, timing is nothing. And like you said, many of us have been at this so long we just dont care about the "convenience" of how the time works out. Really, it's such a personal decision and I can only imagine that a teacher could remotely understand.

IMO, there is just no way to predict, even if a Dr. has high hopes, of a cycle's success. I, myself, would not be willing to risk it, with the chance that there could be a very long wait in store.   To me, having a shorter maternity leave would be well worth starting a cycle ASAP. I tend to fall on the side of a glass is half empty kind of person. I would expect that things will not be as easy as clomid so that I am prepared. It's just not something you can plan.

  • Honestly I don't think you would find many people who would wait in the hopes that their first cycle of clomid works.  That's just the pessimist in me speaking.

In regard to what I would do well I don't care when I have a baby at this point and would not wait another day if I had my choice.  '

    Good Luck!

  • I agree with you all ! Trust me I want a baby so bad that the timing itself is not the issue, its just that I really want to maximize my time off with the baby so that I can enjoy it when it finally happens. I just want to be able to enjoy what I have been waiting for! I appreciate the insight! I understand where you are coming from for sure!

     Thanks! :-)

  • I understand wanting to plan things optimally.  But also, there are so many things you can't control even if you try.  What if your baby comes early?  What if you have twins - they usually come early.  It is hard to step back and realize there is only so much we can control.

I would love to have an October baby so that I can take over the rest of the year and return to work after January.   I would love a March/April/May baby because I think that is a great time of year for birthday parties.

But what I really want most is just a baby.

I wouldn't wait.  Plus IUI only has a 20% chance of success each time.

Very true! It is a hard thing for me to admit I cannot control some things- as I said I am a planner for sure. I know that babies can be born early or all the what if's-- all of which I will be ok with as long as ultimately i have a healthy baby or babies. I guess I was just thinking of the ideal scenario. Thanks for your insight- good reminder for me to remember that I don't have control over this anymore than I do over the IF itself!

  • I wouldn't wait either.

Who knows you could end up pregnant this cycle and go overdue as many 1st time moms do and end up with an August baby. Lol sorry, trying to be optimistic!

  • I can relate on getting the show on the road :)

If it were me I would not wait. As many of the women on this board know, it can take MONTHS, YEARS to get pregnant, and even then, it doesn't always end in a healthy baby 9 months later. You just never know. I would just TTC right away, and who knows, maybe you will get your BFP in November anyway. Good luck to you!
