To late for disability insurance?

Question for you ladies.... is it too late for me to get short term disability insurance (private). My state offers 6 weeks at 50% weekly pay but we know I'm going out for the rest of the school year.

So my question is can I still apply for private disability insurance (I haven't been to a doctor yet).

If so- who do you use/recommend? Thanks!!

Re: To late for disability insurance?

  • I dont know if its the same for all companies/states but the two I looked at stated that they wouldnt cover pregnancy within 10 months of policy- too late for me.

  •  I live in NJ too and I have Prudential (as a teacher, i.e. 10 month employee, I don't qualify for state disability)

Open enrollment is usually in October, right? Talk to your union rep.

  • all insurance companies i tried said there is a 12 month hold i guess to where they dont cover it until after a year of having their insurance...
  • i think most require that you not be PG when you obtain the ins, regardless of whether you've been to the OB.  If you make a claim w/in 9 mos for PG coverage, you would probably be denied.  Mine had a 10 mos waiting period, so you could not be PG when it was obtained.

  • The one I looked into told me that pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition.  Their open enrollment is in Nov. so I'm going to try to apply for it then and hope for the best.

  • Mine told me that I can't have the baby 9 months after the start of the coverage (july). So I'll be right on the dot.
  • I have AFLAC through my work and you have to hold it for 10 months before giving birth.
  • I got AFLAC disability insurance at the end of May.  They told me not to get pregnant until August if I wanted to use the maternity leave pay.  I got pregnant in June, so we won't be covered for that.  My big concern was what would happen if I had to go on bedrest.  No matter when you get pregnant, they'll cover that.  That's why I got it and started TTC in June even though they told me to wait.  At my school, I'm allowed to use sick days (full pay!!!) until they run out.  I have 21 right now, so that would cover the same as 42 days at half pay.  Just start putting some money aside right now and have a little nest egg ready.
