The radio station I'm listening to is asking if you are prepared for the end of the world and I am shocked on how many people have guns, ammo, food, and water saved up for this.
Several callers have called in saying they have cases of MREs, several 55 gallon barrells of water, generators, and cases of ammo. One lady called in saying that she has a years worth of supplies safed up.
I'm sorry but I find this all a little crazy. Am I the only one? And if the world ends doesn't that mean we would all be dead?
Re: NPR: Radio Topic
We are big on disaster preparedness in my house. It's not exactly for the apocalypse, but in case there were emergencies where we could not leave the house for a while. When you have small children, you want to be able to protect, feed, and shelter them in any situation.
We have canned goods, blankets, flashlights, extra batteries, all of our camping gear, water purification tablets, a generator, and many other supplies in storage in case of emergencies. And yes, my husband has a lot of ammunition stockpiled, not just in case he would ever need to use it, but because he fears that this country is not far from taxing it to the point that it becomes outrageously expensive. He buys in bulk while it's still cheap.
People can call it nuts, but the next time there is an ice storm that knocks out power for a week here (it happened several years ago), our babies will be warm, cozy and safe.
I wouldn't give it much thought. The end of the world is not predicted until December 21, 2012. I believe this is based on the Mayan calendar ending and is a Nostradamus prediction. We have at least a couple of years.
We have stuff stored, but not like that. Then again, I live in Florida and we have to be ready (especially now) for a hurricane/tropical storm to hit. Those bastards sometimes come out of nowhere!! We should get a generator, but we haven't yet. At the same time though, where I live, we haven't been hit by one in about 4 or 5 years (awe damn I just jinxed us).
Personally, I think it's always important to have certain things in a closet just in case (like flashlights with batteries, blankets, first aid kit, etc.). I doubt we'll ever get to the extreme of guns and ammo though.
