Does anyone else hate back-to-school season?

I had a break down at Target today and had to leave.  I was walking past the school supplies and saw all of the parents getting their kids ready by picking out school supplies and new clothes.

I started to wonder if DH and I would ever be able to get a little one ready for school.  It made me feel sorry for myself and I cried as I left my cart in the middle of the aisle and walked out.  Anyone else feel this way?

  • I totally hear you.  And I work in a school just to make it more fun......

I worry we'll never have the ability to experience milestones.  DH says that we could always just be the "cool aunt and uncle", but I don't want that.  I want one of my own!

  • I guess I had never thought about it like that... but when I was little, shopping for my school supplies was my FAVORITE day of the year, behind Christmas and my birthday. When I do see that it's back to school season, I do think to myself that I hope my future children love school shopping as much as I did... I just kind of thought I'd have those children by now...

  • I hate it too--but for a very different reason.

I hate it because I live in Auburn, AL and when school starts again this town gets way, way too over crowded. For the first few months of school you can't go to Target, BBB, either Wal-Mart, the mall, drive down the main street by the college, go to pretty much any restaurant..it is super annoying.

(And yes, I realize the city is driven by the university and I work in undergraduate admissions so my job is to get all of these students here, but it is a hard adjustment after the nice, peaceful, quite, lazy summers here.)

I completely understand this sentiment! I went to Penn State for my masters-and hated how it was so nice and quiet and peaceful in the summer and then (Bam!) students back.  DH is a Dean of Students, and he asked if I'd ever want to move to a big (or bigger!) university/college, and I don't know.  I've gotten sued to the quiet life now!

  • YES.  I had the exact same experience at Target this weekend, and I've been bummed out and grumpy ever since.  I'm used to getting upset around babies and little ones, but this was the first time that the sight of older kids and their parents really hit me so deeply.  Even the college kids with their parents, and all the back-to-school commercials too, are tugging at my heartstrings and making me really depressed this weekend.

Hang in there... we'll get there eventually.
