Baby Names

We suck at baby naming

We had a solid boy name, but of course we are having a girl.  For many reasons this is much harder...sigh

We have been all over the place with names, but now have one that we both like.  I had actually suggested it way back, but either he wasn't paying attention or changed his mind because he brought it up last night like it was his idea...haha

Anyway, we wanted something kind of different because our last name is Smith, but not to the point of being weird. Something that would be pretty but still look respectable on a resume. We ended up with:

Cameron Riley Smith

I like both Cameron and Riley, but I'm not so sure about 2 names that make it hard to tell if it is a boy or a girl;)

So other options are:

Cameron Nicole Smith

Cameron Layne Smith

Thoughts and any other mn ideas?

Thanks!

Re: We suck at baby naming

  • I like Cameron Nicole the best. I think it's best to go with a feminine middle name when the first name could go either way. :)

  • Thank you for spelling Cameron correctly!  But it isn't really "different"...it's actually getting pretty popular for girls and will probably be pretty trendy for this age group.  Regardless, I like pp's suggestion of Cameron Jane.

  • Thanks all!

I know I won't be able to find something that fits all my criteria perfectly, but this is pretty close :)  It is at 356 on the popularity list, so that isn't too terrible.

This is really hard - I feel like I have the kids whole future balanced on her name...haha

  • I think your concern is very much founded. I skimmed the post first and thought you were talking about a boy's name at first with Cameron Riley. I don't care for Layne as a full name and I really dislike Nicole - It's so dated and '80s. I don't care a whole lot of Cameron, but it's not bad, either.

Cameron Madeleine (I'm on a Madeleine kick today for some reason.)

  • Can't do Madeline - friend has daughter named that.

Anyone else run into the problem of either knowing someone who already has a name you like, or good names that have bad associations ;) I've had to cross  a lot of names off my list for those reasons:(

Nicholas is a family name, so that is where Nicole is coming from :)

  • I have a very good friend whose name is Cameron Smith and she's a girl...but I would do a very feminine mn so that no one will be confused about her gender before they meet her!

  • I would go with Cameron Nicole. As a teacher, if I can't tell by the first name if the child is a boy or girl I go to the middle name. Riley and Layne are both more masculine and I would probably think boy.

  • FYI Layne is also a boy name, so given your list of mn I would go with Cameron Nicole if you want one that's obviously a girl. Other mn to consider Cameron Noelle, Cameron Nicolette

As for those who say Nicole is an 80s name, it was in the top 100 for much of the 2000s and was 119 on the SS list last year, so I don't consider that as a dated 80s name. If that matters to you anyway. I think Cameron Nicole is a very pretty name.

  • I would choose a girly mn. We have a unisex name for our dd too. Her name was actually Cameron and then before we brought her home we changed it to Peyton! lol

    How about:

    Cameron Elisabeth Smith

    Cameron Paige Smith

    Cameron Faith Smith

    Cameron Grace Smith

    Cameron Jade Smith

    Cameron Brielle Smith

  • I have a good male friend named Cameron Smith.  His middle name is Brynn.  I guess I look at the name, and as much as I like it - Cameron is one of our choices for a boy, I just think boy.  GL!

Honestly, Cameron Nicole Smith makes me think Anna Nicole Smith. It's pretty, but you might get that.

    This!

And it still looks like you want a boy since most of these look like boys names. If your stuck on Cameron (crooked nose, lol), then I'd go Nicole. Layne is misspelled. The Y doesn't make it feminine, and the E does the work of making the A a long sound.

Cameron Nicole gets my vote, but you still have some time - we changed our mind in the third tri - it's hard to do, but I think you still have some time to relax.

Oh, and I agree with PP - thank you for spelling Cameron the right way!

  • I like a very feminine and classic mn to go with Cameron like Elisabeth, Margaret, Frances, Grace, Marie, Victoria, Leigh - or even something a little more exotic like Natasha.

  • Haha...see how much we suck? We thought Layne was a girls name that people had started using for boys - I thought it was a shortened verion of Elaine...doh

I didn't even think of Anna Nicole - yikes!

Our boy name was easy just because my father passed away recently so it incorporated his name as well as my Mom's - Patrick Walter.  So, that one was very personal and a no-brainer for us.

  • My SIL suggested Campbell (as a first name), which means crooked mouth.

What is it with us and crooked body parts?  ;)

Hahahahaha...that's funny! And at least you're in a good spirits about the whole thing. Definitely hang around!

I did a post about the crooked man who walked a crooked mile. I guessed his name to be Cameron Hamilton Campbell with a wife of Brooklyn (broken land) Stick out tongue
