Ever met a Colten?

We decided on spelling Colton, Colten.  First because I think that spelling sounds more like how you say it. Second we are using the middle name Allen (also my husbands) and I like how they look together. Colten Allen.  Anyone ever seen Colten this way? Or do you agree with the spelling/sound? Everyone seems to really like it but they are family and friends so they have to lol. TIA!!!

Re: Ever met a Colten?

  • I knew a Colton. He was actually in my brother's class, so it was more like a vague knowledge. ;) I think the Colton spelling is probably best here. It makes a little more sense in my mind, at least. The -ten ending looks misspelled somehow. It's a really  nice name, IMO! :) I think the combo might be a little rhymey, but it isn't a bit deal IMO as few people will actually ever SAY his full name besides his parents. :)

  • Although the name is nms, I definitely prefer Colton.

    They definitely do have different pronunciations ...

    Colton = KOHL ton

    Colten = KOL ten

    I also agree with pp that the first and middle names don't really flow well together.

    ETA: Oh and to answer your question, I know a baby named Colton but have never met a Colten.

  • I think the name sounds nice, but I much prefer the spelling, Colton.

  • I have a friend named Colton, spelled this way.  I think the spelling Colten looks off to me.  I love the name, but I prefer the spelling of Colton.  I personally think neither spelling works with Allen, but the -ON spelling looks much better than the -EN spelling since Allen also ends in -EN.

  • Well, since you asked- I do not agree with spelling it Colten. I think you should celebrate the difference between Colton and Allen, as Colten Allen looks too matchy matchy. Known what I mean?

    I notice that you are a police officer, and your husband is a firefighter. It seems to me like a family in this position in a community would want to promote literacy and would be ashamed to have a son whose name is spelled wrong. But since you said you've already decided, I won't spend much time trying to sway you.

  • I don't really care for Colton in general because it sounds very country to me, but if I used it, I'd go with the Colton spelling.  Colten just looks weird.

  • Colten looks like it's spelled wrong IMO. I don't think it flows very well with Allen either because the endings sound similar (no matter how you spell Colton).

  • Not sure what the difference is between a "KOHL" and "KOL" pronunciation one of the PP mentioned. I'd pronounce Colten and Colton exactly the same -- first syllable like the word "coal", second syllable like the word "ton". (Accent on 1st syllable.)

    It's definitely a cowboy name, but those are in these days.

    I'm also not sure what "a fireman and a policeman" have to do with promoting literacy or how spelling the name Colton is somehow supposed to do that.

    However, I think the Colten spelling is pretty bad. It looks weaker (e is a weaker letter than o), and Colton Allen is a lot nicer than Colten Allen, which is way too matchy matchy.

    Also, I really like the MN Allen and think it looks great with Colton.

    Probably just because I really like police officers and firefighters in general, and tend to idealize them in my head too much. So it just seemed weird to me that they would feel the need to be youneek, eventhough they are already unique to me. I sometimes forget that they are just people like everyone else. Wink
  • I think Colten looks like you really didn't know how to spell the name correctly.

    I think Colton Allen looks just fine together.

  • I have a cousin named Colten with the E.  Never realiezed that wasn't the norm until I saw this thread.

  • I have met a Colton, and I MUCH prefer that spelling! It looks so much better- Colten just looks wrong. Plus, I think most people are going to assume it is spelled Colton and misspell it. And Colton Allen looks and sounds (there is a subtle difference between Colton and Colten) a lot better than Colten Allen does.
  • I know a newborn named Coleton. I prefer Colton, but it's not HORRIBLE. I've seen a lot worse.

  • I don't think there is really a "right" or "wrong" way to spell a name anymore.  Sure, it might not show up as the suggested spelling but that doesn't mean he's labeled as the kid with the misspelled name.  I am also thinking of using the name only spelled Kolten.  So you are not alone.

    My name is Traci...my mom spelled it that way because my last name also ended in an "i".  People often misspelled my name but it didn't scar me for life or anything.

    If you and your husband agree then you are a lot further than some of us!

    There's nothing wrong with sounding or being a bit country!! It's a reason I would choose a name. As for spelling go with whatever YOU like. I like it either way.

    LOL... Bless your heart.

  • I wish I could go around changing spellings of words and names I think need 'fixing'. Let's see..hmm..Jaycub, Mykel, Danyel. Stick out tongue Poor kid's going to be correcting people for the rest of his life.

    Colton isn't my style, but I prefer it miles over Colten. The TON suffix actually serves a purpose of showing the meaning - Cola's Town or Cole Town, hence the TON. But I suppose if enough people use it like the original Aidan getting the Aiden spelling - then anythings possible.
