1st Trimester

How to eat, when you don't feel like eating.

I'm about 6 weeks in and I KNOW I need to be eating some good stuff to help baby grow and get strong.  Although I haven't really thrown up much, I've really been feeling nauseated.  What should I eat and how should I eat it when I def. don't want to eat anything.  Ugh.

  • I make smoothies, I can drink them quick or real slow, I add protein powder too.  I do frozen fruit, milk, the protein powder, and yogurt.

EXACTLY what I do!!! I find if I can stomach a smoothie (I've had HORRIBLE nausea) that it tends to increase my appetite for the rest of the day/night/etc. They have been a perfect solution for me!

  • It's tough. I feel the same way you do. I am mostly "picking" during the day, and I've been eating mostly dry carbohydrates.

  • It is tough to force yourself to eat when you don't feel like it.  Here are things that worked for me when I had all day long nausea with DS#1:

    - Eat small meals all day long.  I was eating something probably every 1-2 hours (except when sleeping).

    - Eat some cold watermelon every day.  Watermelon is high in vitamin B6 which is said to help with easing nausea.  I would usually eat my watermelon first thing in the morning.

    - Chew on Ginger Chews.  I bought these from Whole Foods and I think the brand is called Ginger People.  These helped me a ton.

    - Stay hydrated drinking lots of water.

    - Potato Chips also helped sometimes - I don't know why, something about the saltiness I think.

Hope the nausea subsides for you soon!

  • I have to just go with what I want at the moment, and try to eat right away, before I get over hungry and feel worse. Yogurt has been great for me, as well as cheese. I cant get enough. Also cold grapes are handy to have around. Other things are random, yesterday I HAD to make ginger cookies, and today I HAVE to make applesauce. Go with whatever you can stomach. GL!

  • My Dr. told me to eat what I felt like.  Even if  I went to Chick-Fil-A everyday eat what your body wants and use 2nd and 3rd tri to eat the better stuff.  Plus that's why we got PNV.

  • I've been sucking on peppermints all morning because I just can't seem to eat anything before noon without feeling so nauseous I'm going to pass out. Then I eat chicken noodle soup for lunch. That is what I have been eating for the last 2 weeks.

  • Grapes are my savior.  I went to Fresh and Easy on Tuesday and picked up a big box of them.  They lasted me through Friday.  I can snack on them all day.  They were a huge help.  They'll really help with your appetite too.  They say to eat small meals during the day.  I can't do that, but with the grapes, I can at least eat some more normal foods, even if it's just a little at a time.

This. It's better to eat, even if it's not super healthy than to not eat at all.

And for me, I find that when I start to feel the nausea, it's time to eat.  If I eat small snacks every 2-3 hours, it helps a ton.  When nothing sounds good, I go for a carb (even plain cheerios) and just try to get a bit of that down.

I like the smoothie idea! I'm going to have to try that...

  • Thanks, these are giving me some good options.  We are going out to eat tonight, and I think I might be munchin' on a smoothie instead of 'real' foods.  I'm glad to have the pressure of 'eating right' at this moment because I can barely eat anything, much less 'right' food.
