I am new to facebook and can't for the life of me figure out what it means to "poke" someone. What does it mean??

I only do it back and forth to my H.  A long time ago we some how got an inside joke going between us where one of us would walk up to the other and poke them while saying mildly loudly...  POOOKE.  It turned into an I Love You thing at some point.  And now we use that feature to essentially say I love you back and forth on FB in our own special way.  

 

Past this, I have no clue what others use it for.

I think its just meant to be a way to get someones attention.  Some people have hundreds of facebook friends (not me ha) and it will show up that someone "poked" you and then maybe you will go look at their posts

I think its just like a way of saying hi.  Not many people use it anymore.  Dont think i ever have.

My friends and I use it during "poke wars".   I think, like PPs said, it is to get someone elses attetion.  But you can use it for fun too!
